There is a stirring, a movement to redefine what the church sees as worship. Worship is change. It is more than just a service that lasts for an hour on Sunday mornings, not a ritual that only the devout can engage in. More than a singing session. Not a show. True worship transforms and changes an individual. It transforms who they are, and as a result what they are about.
From this truth, Awaken has come. Birthed in the hearts of Joel Warren and Rob Peabody, this project to serve the local community is an extension of lives called to something more. "Awaken is a plea to resurrect the worship culture of the church; a call to marry action with faith, so that we live worship and are passionate about what He is passionate about", says Rob. Awaken will encompass acts of service, seeds of hope and uplifting music to inspire those in need. It is more than a weeklong mission trip to a distant land. As Joel explains, “God is stirring our hearts in a fresh way. This is a time for the church to rise up and care for the needy and broken…not only around the world, but also next door or across the street. As followers of Christ, we must do justice now, where we worship and where we live.” Accompanying these acts of service and deeds of justice will be a central website outlining projects and opportunities for those who want to get involved. It will also feature numerous ministries that do everything from feeding the homeless to mentoring women in prison. From Dallas to San Francisco and London to New York, various partners will highlight service opportunities in their local areas as well. Those who serve will have a chance to leave their story and see how God is using the church to care for the local community. Awaken is focusing in on simple yet far-reaching themes. As outlined in Micah 6:8, God has shown us what is good. Now what is required of us? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with Him. Rob summarizes, "God desires for us to care about the down and out, to love others – more than just our friends and family, and to be a light in our communities for His name. Our desire is that He would use this project to be a catalyst to do just that."
