Because of the classical influences in his music (which in the beginning appealed mostly to an older audience), some people have the mistaken impression that Josh is a suit-and-tie, pristine guy who acts more like a 50 year old than a 25 year old. Wrong! While Josh definitely has a maturity beyond his years and a load of discipline for someone his age, he enjoys the same things most 20-somethings do; He listens to Radiohead, Bjork, Depeche Mode, and the Afro-Celts.
Josh is very close to his parents, Jack and Lindy Groban, and his younger brother Chris. He credits them for keeping him grounded and centered, and always speaks of them in the most glowing terms. He calls Chris "the wisest person I know."

To fans around the world, Josh Groban is a classically influenced pop singer whose voice critics have called “deliciously flawless”. The Grammy nominated artist has performed for audiences on five continents and has sold 15 million albums worldwide. Over half a million people attended his sold-out Closer concert tour in 2004-2005.
Shortly after beginning Carnegie Mellon University as a theatre-musical theater major. Josh was signed by Warner Bros. Records. After seeing Josh perform at a charity event, David E. Kelley, included him on two Ally McBeal episodes in which he debuted “You‘re Still You” and “To Where You Are”. Josh subsequently appeared with Josh Williams and The Boston Pops and performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, Christmas at the Vatican, and at the 2002 Winter Olympics in an unforgettable performance of The Prayer with Charlotte Church. He became the best selling new male artist of 2002 and his in-concert performance in Pasadena, which was recorded by PBS for their Great Performances series, became the top selling concert DVD of 2003. Also that year, Josh fulfilled another dream performing a leading role on Broadway in a one-night only concert performance of the musical Chess to benefit The Actor‘s Fund. The Playbill reviewer characterized Josh as “one of the richest, fullest baritones of any male singer around.”
Josh counts Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber among those who influenced his love of music and musical theatre. He was therefore honored when, in 2005, he was invited to perform at A Tribute to Stephen Sondheim at the Hollywood Bowl and, in 2006, at The Kennedy Center Honors on behalf of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Other noteworthy performances included “Believe” for Polar Express with Beyonce at the 2005 Academy Awards, performing with John Williams at Tanglewood, singing with Sarah McLachlan at Live 8 and performing before an audience of 500,000 in Rome to support Quincy Jones’ We Are the Future charity. In 2006 Josh was invited by Barbara Cook to join her as a guest artist when she performed at The Metropolitan Opera House. This performance was recorded live and released as Barbara Book at the Met.
Josh‘s 2005 concert tour to South Africa was a life-changing experience. He was privileged to meet Nelson Mandela and visit children in Soweto who are supported by Nelson Mandela‘s Foundation. It was during that trip that Josh heard the song “Weeping” for the first time. “The song just floored me. It is about not forgetting the mistakes that have been made in our history and about the common humanity that we share, despite differences during time of conflict. It has so much relevance at this exact point in our history. We all need to go back to that place right now.”
To Josh, “Awake” represents a kind of awakening to a new musical possibilities, blending styles that his fans embrace with unexpected collaborations. He continues to demonstrate his versatility as an artist, co-writing and co-producing with a variety of collaborators including his longtime producer, David Foster, British producer Marius DeVries, songwriter Glen Ballard, French world music composer Eric Mouquet, electronica producer Guy Sigsworth and Imogen Heap. Other artists who made important contributions to the album include Dave Matthews, South Africa‘s Ladysmith Black Mombazo, Tawgs Salter, Five for Fighting‘s John Ondrasik, Herbie Hancock, and Leo Z.
What inspired Josh to explore new musical territory? “I needed to stretch my creative boundaries. You can always remain where it‘s comfortable, but it‘s exhilarating to challenge yourself creatively. I don‘t invest a lot of emotional energy trying to categorize what I do. My music always comes from my heart, from my soul. The voice I have is the voice I have. It‘s how I express myself and it‘s not something I ever want to lose. I always choose songs or styles that are personal to me. At the same time, my musical tastes are broad, and that translates into songs that cross musical genres. I want my fans to know that a Josh Groban album or concert will contain a few musical surprises, and that they are part of a musical journey that is just beginning.”
