New in 2008: For a long time I've been using a portable Sony DAT recorder with a stereo mic, but just recently I decided to go ditch the tape and opt for the Tascam DR-1. Also portable with stereo mic, but the media is compact flash. No more recording into the DAT, then playing back in real time to edit inside the computer with Audacity or SoundForge. Been pretty happy with it so far.
New in October 2007: Shires tenor trombone with axial flow valve, .547 slide with bass crook, and three leadpipes, Greg Black 4GS mouthpiece
Equipment I recently sold: Bach 42G CO tenor trombone with convertible open wrap and traditional rotor, Denis Wick mouthpiece
Equipment I sold a while ago: Bach 36B tenor trombone with closed wrap and traditional rotor, Bach mouthpiece and hard shell case
Equipment I still own: Selman alto trombone with generic small shank mouthpiece, and various other mouthpieces, including one I use for embouchure training with the cup of a Bach 6 1/2 AL mostly cut away

About me:

Hello world. I run http://www.AwesomeTromboneLinks.net and (something I hope you'll notice in 2009) I'm the ITA Webmaster for http://www.trombone.net so I'm always on the lookout for trombone related stuff. Hope you find what you're looking for, and I hope it's a trombone! I'm also a Squidoo Lensmaster who has tried to gather lots of trombone related items under one topic. My latest experiment is the trombone page at Million Dollar Wiki.

Who I'd like to meet:

(Handshake or see up close in person)
  • trombonist Robin Eubanks: check!
  • astronaut Alan Shepard: check!
  • actor Jim Nabors: check!
  • writer Stuart Woods: check!
  • astronomer Carl Sagan: check!
  • actor Ernest Borgnine: check!
  • athlete Walter Payton: check!
  • coach Bobby Bowden: check!
  • actor Robert Duval: check!
  • blues musician Topper Price: check!
  • actor Howie Mandel: check!
  • magician Lance Burton: check!
  • There are more, let me keep thinking about it.
  • I really wish I had met Randy Pausch!

Okay, so this next thing isn't really about trombones. But I guess it could be about computers in music! I remember my fascination with 52x CD-ROM drives back in 1994 or 95, and how I thought we were really pushing the boundaries of speed and capabilities with computers. But that was back in the 486 and Pentium days! I just saw this January 2009 video about an overclocked CPU from AMD called Phenom II X4. They pushed it beyond 3GHz by using liquid nitrogen and reached 6GHz. Wow. So that's in my mind now, thinking my next laptop should be able to run at least 6GHz or I'll be disappointed. I was just starting to get used to multiple cores and settling with 3GHz. Not any more, baby!

I've been checking out a few local and regional bands like Glove Box Heat, seen below in Mobile, AL and at a GBH House Party. I think they sound great. Not sure if they'll be in Atlanta anytime soon, so I might drive to Birmingham to catch them at Rojo in February 2009.

I'm a big fan of voiceovers. Since my experiment with digital vs analog television where I found QUBO and the "Jacob Two-Two" series, I have been impressed with Billy Rosemberg. When I searched for more information about Billy I found the following 2007 documentary. Very cool.

And finally, something trombone-related. I had this up a while ago, but I thought it was funny enough to just leave it up again. My connection to this Peterson Project video: I did an internship at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando (I think in 1997?). You might notice Steve Davis, the former band director at CCHS, make an appearance in the video, which I thought was hilarious. Enjoy.

On Friday, March 13, 2009 I saw this clip on Gizmodo. It only took about a minute of listening to it for me to like it, especially with the inclusion of a trombone player to really kick their funky groove. Enjoy.
