Axel
was born 11.28.19.. in Bergisch Gladbach (near Cologne),Germany.
Learned guitar at the age of 14. In the age of 20 he was trained by trumpet-player DON CHERRY. Jammin' with the fellows from
"CAN" and "KRAAN" in early days. First record release 1977 with his Band FOOD BAND in England on Pye. In the 80's he
became part of the german rockscene as live and sessionplayer and composer. Working there with his schoolfriend WOLF MAAHN, KLAUS LAGE,
WESTERNHAGEN or HERBERT GRÖNEMEYER he is to be heard on ca. 2,5 mill sold records of that period, which gave him the opportunity to direct not only his his characteristic playinstyle but his own songwriting over to a mayor public. At that time he became one of the most fav. guitarplayers on the german scene and one of a few with international response. In the 90's he combined his abilities in
instrumental visionable music and songwriting to release 2 Albums with EMI, "HEILHECKER" and "CULTURE CROSS", produced by himself. He produced the first german Surroundsound-album, released by jazz/folk
violinplayer THOMAS KAGERMANN, worked with the UNKNOWN CASES, produced the classical sitar player T.N. NAGAR from India and released a album together with Djembe-player SAMSON GASSAMA from Gambia.
From 1996 till it's end 2008 he was member of the original "HARALD SCHMIDT SHOW"-Band too, with MEL COLLINS (KING CRIMSON,CAMEL,DIRE SRAITS),
ROSKO GEE (TRAFFIC, GO, CAN), HELMUT ZERLETT etc.,backing up show and guests like OLETA ADAMS, NINA HAGEN, WILLI DEVILLE, BRIAN FERRY, MEATLOAF, CANDY DULFER,GRACE JONES,NINA HAGEN, ERIC BURDON etc.This kind of a german
version of the "Letterman Show" was transmitted daily on german TV's main channels. ..1995 he started up “PHONOROID" with Singer, Poet and Filmmaker VANESSA VASSAR from New Mexico,they released 3 Albums at Intuition/Schott and produced some Documentary together.
The latest one "CINDERELLAS OF SANTA FE" just won (April 07)the IIFF - award as best US documentary, while their alternative Avantgarde-folkmusic took place around the world. Another act featured by Axel as producer and musician as well is "SUNYA BEAT".This band together with famous "ASHRA" - drummer HARALD GROSSKOPF and later on
with electronic-soundingeneer STEVE BALTES (DEEP VOICES), became another mayor output since 1996. They released 3 Albums, one with Axel's own label “ PHONOKULTUR". They did a couple of sound
illustrations for german Light-artist MISCHA KUBALL as well, shortly in April 07' together with STEFAN SCHNEIDER (ROCOCCO ROT). Their Freestyle, Trance and Big Beat sound is considered as takin' german Old School - Electronics and Spacesound further into "time and space", same as "FISHMOON", Axel's personal release playground of "guitaristic space music". With "FISHMOON" he follows up early ECM-traditions as well as 70's Prog- and Spacerock Sound. 2 Albums are available at Herzbergverlag and Phonokultur.
Axel is writer of a column for the guitar magazin "Grand Guitars", which is represented on this MySpace-Site.
