Venues I've booked/most memorable moments:
During the VA years there was virtually no place for us to play in Kalamazoo (other than house parties). The manager at Club Soda told me the closest thing to punk rock he was ever going to book was the Flying Tigers (a rockabilly band from Lansing). As a result Richard Bowser and I decided to start our own student group "Students For Progressive Action" on campus to book the East Hall gym and the student ballroom. The first show I booked in the gym was supposed to be TSOL but I had a mixup with their manager and they couldn't make it. So I called around and talked a new band from Chicago into playing out of town for the first time. It was Naked Raygun and they were fantastic. We became very good friends and VA played many more shows with them. The biggest show in the gym involved Naked Raygun and another band on tour for the first time - the Butthole Surfers. Corey Rusk (Touch and Go) called me and begged me to let them play for whatever I could give them. I guaranteed them $100. We had more than 500 people there for the show. Some kids drove in from Canada! Other bands I booked in the gym were Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Samhain. Also accessible to us was the student ballroom in the student center. Fav shows there were Angry Red Planet and the Minutemen. I also booked shows on the campus of K-College thru my friends in the band "Dick & The Balls." In an empty room they called "The Blackspot," I had greats like Minor Threat and Negative Approach play. In their ballroom I had Discharge (from England!) perform. There was also a little restaurant next to WMU's campus called "Grandma's Kitchen" where I had bands like Das Damen and the Laughing Hyenas play. I also booked halls around Kalamazoo. In the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall I had a Misfits(w/Glenn!)/Necroes/Violent Apathy bill.Only around 50 people showed up and the PA blew but it was fun. The manager there watched The Misfits put on their make-up and said to me "I haven't seen anything like this since KISS!" At the Knights Of Columbus Hall I made a slight error and booked the Crucifucks in the basement while a wedding reception was going on in the upstairs part of the hall. The Crucifucks' bassist urinated on the sidewalk in front of the hall in full view of the wedding party. The immediate response was a drunk groom barging in on the show threatening to beat up everyone while his groomsmen held on to him. I also booked Articles Of Faith (from Chicago) for a show there.
Who I'd like to meet: Sir Graves Ghastly, The Ghoul, Jonathon Winters, Don Rickles
