In 2005 Azuka Theatre launched its educational/outreach program (Stages in Education) at William H. Bodine High School in Philadelphia. This ten-week program focuses on the development and staging of new plays created and performed by the school’s students.

Azuka Theatre knows the impact theater can have on young minds; we continue to see the amazing development of the students we worked with. Our goals for this program remain two-fold: to introduce theater arts to the students of Bodine High School and to establish in the minds of these young students the power and pleasure one can derive from live theater, thus helping to create the audiences of tomorrow.

We plan to use this program as a model that can be taken to other schools in the Philadelphia region, allowing students from all over the city to reap the benefits from our experience as well as the positive results that arts education has been proven to provide.

About me:

Located in Philadelphia, Azuka Theatre was founded in 1999 by a group of young artists participating in the Arden Theatre Company’s nationally recognized Professional Apprentice Program.

Azuka Theatre has built a reputation for accessible, thought-provoking and socially conscious theatre. Over the past nine seasons, Azuka Theatre has produced fifteen plays and been hailed as “a company to watch” and a “major player on the Philadelphia alternative theatre scene,” by Philadelphia Weekly.

In 1999 they were awarded the Philadelphia Gay News’ LAMBDA Award for Outstanding Arts Event for their first production, La Rue des Faux. They have received one Barrymore Award for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Musical -- Kim Carson for Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2008) and six Barrymore Award Nominations; Outstanding New Play for An Artist’s Workshop (2004), Best Actress in a Play -- Mary Martello in The Boys (2006), Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical, Outstanding Direction of a Musical -- Kevin Glaccum, Outstanding Musical Direction -- Troy Herion, and Outstanding Leading Actor in a Musical -- Dito van Reigersberg (2008).

Our Mission: Azuka Theatre strengthens the connection and shared humanity among its diverse audiences by giving voice to the people whose stories go unheard.

Who I'd like to meet:

Theater Artists, Audience Members, Funders, Administrators and more in Philadelphia and everywhere.
