   About The Baal Shem Tones
Songwriters/singers Helene and Michael Kates turn their talents to Jewish music.

A tiny package with the power of Streisand, the sweetness of Alison Krauss and the delivery of Billie Holiday all rolled into one, Helene Kates has an extraordinary voice described by world renowned performing artist Neshama Carlebach as "moving and unforgettable... a unique and holy light to the world of Jewish music."

Helene's spirited enthusiasm and open heart are palpable and uplifting. The Atlanta Jewish Times describes her as "...delightful, a dynamo of energy (with) wonderful stage presence." They comment that Helene's songwriting "...packs a powerful spiritual punch (that) stands out as different from standard musical Jewish fare."

The Baal Shem Tones' debut CD All Our Lives was released in 2004 to international praise. Helene's lush vocals and her husband Michael's skillful production make it a listenable and cohesive work. With varied textures throughout, this is an exciting album from beginning to end. The title track "All Our Lives" and "Sleepytown" showcase Helene and Michael's contemporary sound while featuring Helene's impressive vocal range and intricately woven harmonies. There are sweet classical moments of pure personal prayer in "Azor Li Lashir Lach" and "L'ma'an Y'zamercha." Their rousing "Oseh Shalom" has been selected as part of the upcoming women's international Voices for Israel project.

Exclusively on MySpace we have included two downloadable re-mixes of tracks from the CD. "Sleepytown" was remixed for inclusion in a showcase compilation. "Azor Li Lashir Lach" was remixed with an additional 23 seconds for a stunning interpretive music video made by director Adam Stoner. The video debuted in February 2006 to a select audience at Kinus HaShluchos Lubavitch in New York, and will be shown for the first time to a worldwide general audience the CAJE Conference in August.
