“We have met on December 2005 while participating to an « artist- residence » in Alep.
Then, after a tour in Kuwait, we asked Mohannad (Khaled’s younger brother) to join us in this venture.
This was the birth of Bab Assalam and we have done our first steps on the road by
touring extensively all over Syria in 2007. Then we prepared the
recording of this CD that took place in Alep in July 2008.
Our music, our compositions and improvisations are inspired by our own traditions with the greatest respect and attention granted to each one of them. That’s why we are using scales and « maqâms » (a specific mode of oriental music) in our compositions. Our rhythm (10, 7, or 5 measures) comes from the oriental tradition, but it happens also that we are playing a valse... Bab Assalam is influenced by the meditative Sufi’s thought (some of the lyrics of this CD are Sufi’s poetry), but we are addressing it in a style closer to the occidental tradition.
We have recorded this CD in the Old City of Alep at the « House of Beit Jabri » which is the place where we first met. This ancient building, close to the famous Citadel, has such a unique atmosphere that it was very important for us to meet again and to record in this house.
The name of the group - Bab Assalam (the gate of peace) - is the name of one of the gate of this magical and mythical city”.
