PORTLAND, OR - Long before Babydollars went public in 2005, the project had been in the research and development phase for years, analyzing consumer needs and raising capital. Founder and CEO Toussaint Perrault recalls, "We were a scrappy little upstart, but we had heart. We began with little more than a trombone and a dictaphone." Singing songs in the late night quiet of studio apartments, busking on winter streets with a banjo, and making beats on a borrowed drum machine were but a few steps in the making of the Babydollars sound. After playing with Portland party heroes Ape Shape Perrault eventually branched out, lending his horn sound to friends the Golden Bears, Mirah, Evolutionary Jass Band, 31Knots, Chores, and The Maybe Happening, among others. Initial interest began accruing after Perrault recorded demos in Portland and Brooklyn, and experimented with different live arrangements for Babydollars shows around Portland.
With the band’s debut album, IF YOU WERE MY HOMEGIRL, YOU’D BE HOME BY NOW, GIRL, Babydollars has tried to capture the sound of every incarnation the band has had. "I got to record songs with my favorite people in all of Portland - in all the world. It just so happens that my friends are also all incredibly shredding musicians." Perrault enlisted the help of veteran Portland rocker Ralf Youtz (Built to Spill, The Feelings) to put together an album over the course of 2007. HOMEGIRL’s sound is indebted to all of the Babydollars collaborators, including members of Ape Shape, Old Time Relijun, Swords, the Dolomites, Starantula, Rag and Bone Men, Larry Yes and Corrina Repp. Recent live shows have ranged from improvised instrumentals with tape loops to a five-piece psych-rock outfit. "The whole Board of Directors has gone batshit," Perrault says. "Let’s just say that if our First Quarter estimates are correct, anyone with options in this company will see quite a return on their Babydollars."
Perrault remains active as a member of Portland bands Tu Fawning and The Pink Widower, and is excited about sharing HOMEGIRL with as many people as possible. "Babydollars is the dough you throw in the tip jar, or the cash you give to a band for a record at a show. All the untaxed millions shared among friends, from art galleries to hash houses." In today’s volatile market, Perrault’s business model for Babydollars is based on love. Those looking to make bank on a blue chip pop investment are guaranteed to watch their Babydollars grow!
