My influences are so diverse and wide, I really dig old stuff,
from Motown greats to old French classics, Jazz (Ella Fritzgerald)
and all of that good soul music. World Beat is a huge part of me,
I love the music from my country Haiti (Kompa), Salsa and Merengue,
Samba, Reggae, Soca and Calypso, Brazilian jazz, African music,
the more culture the better. Growing up in Montreal Canada I was
exposed to a lot of Pop/Rock/Alternative, Country/Folk music
and local French acts which became a part of me and I now draw
from all of those genres. Of course some of today's music and
artists I love and they are doing their thing (wont mention names)
but I find that a lot of it lakcs depth and conception.
The hardest thing to achieve is that balance between what sales
and what people want and keeping an artistic integrity offering
concious and more real music, gotta consider that! In all, I am
happy to be doing what I do, as long as I get to write and sing and
surround myself with talented folks, and I also welcome success, lol.
My music is a blend of all those experiences, why limit yourself if you
feel that all those genres of music are real to you and when you feel
that you truly own it. There are no bounds when it comes to music,
I sing and write French, English, Creole and my music is a blend of
Afro-beats, Hip Hop, Caribbean, R&B and Pop, might even be more!
And all of that is, me!

My big break came the day I had the opportunity to write with Wyclef Jean on the song “911”. That day at the New York City Hit Factory in Studio 1 I believe, the stars were simply lined up. They say that there is no such thing as luck, well if luck means “when opportunity meets preparation”, I was prepared. The words came almost instantly and I did not need anyone’s approval, I knew they were right. You never know what a song is going to do but I knew this one was going to be big! It had all the right ingredients, an amazing musician, songwriter and performer such as Wyclef Jean, the queen of Hip Hop/Soul herself Mary J. Blige featured, an original, metaphoric, heartfelt concept and last but not least and not to peep my own horn “me”. What a great blessing that was, but God had an even bigger plan as though this was not blessing enough, the song went on to be nominated at the Grammy Awards and further more I had the honor of performing it live with both Clef and Mary at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. I sang alongside the industry’s most coveted artists such as Eric Clapton, Marc Anthony, Stevie Wonder, Macy Gray and sharing the stage with Destiny’s Child and Charlotte Church. All that said, the highlight of the night for me only came when Mary stepped on stage and started to sing my words. That was a treat!

Nothing you have ever heard!
That's too easy to say right? I know... People always say "Sade" for lack of something closer I think, it's that exotic thing I guess. You will hear the Caribbean vibe or the Creole in my voice, you will hear the R&B, the rockish pop egde. My music is simple and to the point. I mostly write from the heart, if you listen carefully, you will know me and my most intimate thoughts, maybe not in the club songs, but if you look you will find and know me.
I love harmonies, the engineers and producers always get to the point where their like "Kat we are running out of tracks" I'm like "please make room I gotta hear that"... I just love music. There is always that need to compare a new artist with another.
I am not trying to sound like anyone out there. I sang many cover tunes over the years and I can sound like whom ever I want, but my natural voice is so different than what you would commonly hear, it's hard to pin it down. They say Sade, Tony Braxton or Anita Baker because my voice is very breathy... that's what I assume. Kind of hard to answer that question "what does your music sound like?". It's not programmed, I take it as it comes, I try not to manipulate it. When I have an inspiration, I try not to think about the trends, not right away anyway. I write in different genres and languages that questions like "what kind of a singer are you? Which category does your music belong to? what's your style? are just very hard to answer for me and you run the risk of loosing yourself because the definition is so wide. It would be so much easier if I just sang French or something. I guess it has it's advantages and disadvantages. Now I say "I'm working on a Dancehall/Caribbean/R&B record" if they insist on knowing more, then I'll go into what else I do, gotta simplify... The real question is, does it feel good?
Katia, professionally known as BabyKat, comes to the music industry like a breath of fresh air. Her sound is sensual, unique, and exotic. Katia’s angelic sultry voice, combined with Remi’s raw edge Caribbean rhythms is a match made in Heaven.
Now signed to HeavyTone Records she is finally home and ready to get her career started. The head of her label Kevin Myers is exited and committed to bringing BabyKat’s album to great heights, which is a dream that Katia has been seeking ever since she was a little girl.
