Box 653 Wausau, WI 54402 ![]() KEYSHONS STORY Keyshon Michael Ivey was born December 4th, 2006 at Aspirus Hospital birthing Center in Wausau, WI. He weighed 7 lbs, 6ozs, and was 20 inches long. Keyshon was delivered 3 weeks prematurely by emergency c-section. That ended up being a blessing, because his umbilical cord was wrapped several times around his neck, and he may have not survived if they had not delivered him early. December 6th, two days after Keyshon was born, he was flown to Milwaukee's Children's Hospital due to a blockage in his small intestine. The doctors performed an emergency surgery that evening in order for him to survive. They took the blockage out, and he ended up getting an Ostemee. After 6 weeks, the doctors did a second surgery to reconnect the inside of his intestines. They had to wait the 6 weeks between surgeries to allow the intestines to regrow so they could reattach them. After recovering from his surgery, Keyshon wasn't taking his feeds as he was supposed to. As a result of that, the doctors had to insert a feeding tube into his stomach called a G-tube. They also put in a CVL line, which is a long term IV. Due to the shortage of his intestines, his little body was, and still, is not able to tolerate his feeds, so, they put him on TPN, which is vitamins and minerals and fat lipids, etc. Keyshons body isn't handling that well. He started having severe side effects, including internal jaundice, which led the doctors to do a liver biopsy to check and see if he had Biliary Estresia. Thankfully, the results of that test were negative. The TPN is a catch 22 cycle. It is providing him the nutrients he is missing by not being able to eat foods (because his bowels cannot digest them) but it is damaging his liver. After they checked for biliary estresia, doctors decided to go back in again and do an exploratory surgery. They discovered scar tissue blocking his bowels, so, they had to schedule Keyshon for another surgery. Afterwards, he was transferred out of the Neo Natal intensive Care unit, and moved to the 7th floor pediatrics unit. The doctors couldn't release him yet because his feeds were still not how they should be for a 3 1/2 month old baby. On April 28th Keyshon was finally released From Milwaukee's Children's hospital and sent home to Wausau and the family. He still has a feeding tube(g-tube) and he is hooked up to the CVL IV and TPN medication 14 hours a day. After being home for just near a month, he started to get a bacterial infection from the CVL line, and he had to get another surgery. He was then hospitalized twice with the bacterial infection, because it would get better after a few days, then they would send him home. Despite the home nurses to help regularly change his dressings, the bacterial infection turned into a nearly lethal fungal infection. Keyshon got really sick and was back in the hospital 3 times in 3 weeks. He had a fever of 105.6. The doctors immediately started him on antibiotics to help with the fungal infection, which, in turn, messed with the blood flow to his kidneys causing him problems with his kidneys. The doctors still didn't know where the infections were coming from. They performed another exploratory surgery hoping to find the blockage, which they did not find. The Doctors did discover that the fungal infection was in his bowel. They removed 1/4 of his bowel. A day and a half after his surgery, he was really sick again. His whole body was swollen. They sent him down to intensive care. The Doctors performed another emergency surgery. They discovered that he had acid in his blood, when they removed a fourth of his bowel, his blood was producing too much acid, that prevented his blood from clotting correctly. Keyshon was bleeding internally from his bowel surgery. They didn't think he would make it off the operating table. He remained in intensive care for one and a half days after his surgery, and finally, then, they released him from the hospital 5 days later. When Keyshons Mom, Holly, went to his follow up appointment a week and a half later, they told Holly that Keyshon has to have a bowel transplant, or he won't make it. Also, if he doesnt recieve one soon, the TPN treating his bowels will cause him to need a liver transplant as well, as the side-effect of the medicine causes jaundice. The Gi Doctor also said if he gets another infection like the previous fungal infection, before he can get the transplants, he won't make it. He is not strong enough to fight another infection. His bowels are not big enough or growing how they should be. His little body can not tolerate much food at all. Keyshon is 9 months old on Sept. 4th. He has spent over half of his life laying down. He hasn't been able to eat through his mouth. The G-tube is like a little button on his little tummy. :( He is a very happy baby in spite of his health problems. He can stand up with somebody holding him, and support his weight for nearly a minute. He is full of smiles and giggles and loves life, though, his has been hard. He is a fighter. The doctor told Holly she would need to go to a bowel transplant specialist in Nebraska. He also told Holly that he would take care of setting up the doctors appointments and surgeries and all the medical stuff, but he said Holly needs to prepare by figuring out how she will feed, house, and travel herself in NE, as well as figure out how she will pay her rent, utilities and feed her older two children ages 4 and 7 at home. She will need airfare and daycare expenses and a car, because she doesn't own one. She is a single mother, although Keyshon's Daddy, Randy, has been there to support Holly and accompany her back and forth from Milwaukee to Wausau. Randy plans to travel with Holly to Nebraska as well, he loves his son and wants to be there. Holly and Keyshon have an appointment to meet with the bowel specialist in Nebraska on October 28th. She doesn't know if her WI state-provided medical assistance covers this mandatory out of state surgery either. They will need a nanny while she is out of state for what the doctor said could be up to 3 months. Holly doesn't have the airfare to fly from Wisconsin to Nebraska in an instances notice, even if they get a matching liver donor. We have looked into Ronald Macdonald housing in NE for Holly, etc... there are plenty of resources out there that we plan to utilize.
