The Replacements, Paul Westerberg, Big Star, Alex Chilton, Marc Bolan, The Jayhawks, Mark Olson, Gary Louris, Golden Smog, The Everly Brothers, Ronnie Lane, The Beatles (all of them), Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Jason and The Scorchers, Cheap Trick, Soul Asylum, Aerosmith, Stray Cats, Brian Setzer, Bruce Springsteen, Gin Blossoms, Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Jackson Browne, Counting Crows, Mr. Butch Walker, Blind Melon, Elliot Smith, The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, Love, Arthur Lee, The Byrds, Cat Stevens, Teenage Fanclub, The Faces, The Rolling Stones, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Jellyfish, Small Faces, Radiohead, E.L.O........
Also my dad.
Ups and Downs, is a melodic treat that fans of Teenage Fanclub, The Pernice Brothers and Big Star will enjoy. The gorgeous "Away" opens, reminding me of Cotton Mather's "Baby Freeze Queen", and it's followed by the midtempo "Suddenly", which out-TFs Teenage Fanclub. Just to show they aren't exclusively "soft", Mazzola & Co. rock out on the raucous "Everyday (I Die a Little Bit)", but "Morning Light" and "World from Outside" reinforce their melodic bonafides. They close with a cover - a nice version of The Replacements' "Skyway". - Absolutepowerpop (U.S.A.)
Mazzola has an affection for several classic pop influences like The Byrds, John Lennon, and The Replacements. The album goes through many moods, from fast tempo punk guitars of "Everyday (I Die a Little Bit)" to the mid tempo jangle of "Suddenly,"and then the somber Jeff Lynne-like ballad "One More Chance." All songs are full of great classic hooks and interesting chord changes that I know pop fans will cherish. Juan's vocals have the same gentle delivery of Lennon and the melodic qualities are excellent here. Lead guitarist Cristian Basualdo does a great job here too, as the duo recall Let It Be-era Lennon-McCartney on a pair of tracks ("The Riots" and "Ups and Downs"). "Morning Light" owes much to Big Star and Badfinger, the music coming from a deeply emotional place. You won't be disappointed here -- this is highly recommended to powerpop fans - Powerpopaholic (U.S.A.)
There has always been something about Baby Scream that I just love. I am willing to bet that the main reason for a love of this band is the attention paid to song writing.
Songs 1 through three are mellow, yet hooky. Song 4, “Everyday (I Die A Little Bit)”, however opens things up and Juan proves to all of us that he can rock out with the best of them.
Back to mellow town, “One More Chance” leads one to think of post Beatles John Lennon.
There is no doubt in my mind that the stand out track on this release comes along at number 8 in the form of “Morning Light”.
Wonderful groove, wonderful production with a guitar that cuts through exactly as it should, and a keyboard that would make Ian MacLagan proud.
“Walls Crumbling Down” rocks out pretty hard in all honesty, and sets the band into more of a Rock and Roll vibe.
Track 12 took me by complete surprise.
When I saw “Skyway” listed on the back of the CD I was fearful it was the Mats song. But knowing Juan, I had a feeling it was.
And it is.
But the version Baby Scream pulls out here is brilliant. The type of cover that needs to be sent on to Paul Westerberg, and I am sure he would love it.
This is a great CD. Strong writing, wonderful execution, and a heart beating inside that could warm everybody! - Carl Isonhart / Sonic Ruin Magazine (U.S.A.)
Marvellous 12-string-cracky-songs, sometimes a
bit louder with stormy stompers and an excellent
passionate , but NOT plaintive VOICE - creates
a perfect mixture for the first sunny days in
the year , but also for the beloved autumn
depression...Just one minus: ONLY 6 songs, I want
a lot more of them!!!

Baby Scream are a testament to today's international internet pop culture, where an album can be made in Brisbane, Birmingham or Buenos Aires without anyone being able to tell the difference. Whether that's a good thing is an argument for another day. This is pop from the Western world! Although Baby Scream are a band, songwriter and vocalist Juan Mazzola is the driving force. Since 2001 the band has existed as a solo project, an acoustic duo or a full band, performing and recording in a variety of styles from Britpop to punk, before settling on their current approach, which involves tuneful acoustic pop based around acoustic guitars with keyboard and electric guitar backing. - Shindig! Magazine (U.K.)
Their EP entitled "Monsters" currently doing the rounds on the Beyond your Mind imprint reveals a softly alluring pop prowess at work that taps into the mindset of the Beatles more reflective moments as well as splicing elements of Epicycle's mercurial retro tones and Kevin Tihista's criminally undervalued back catalogue. From the skiffle shanty like 'slut' with its LA's meets the Coral nuances to the slow burning naked ambition of the intimately raw 'mars', Baby Scream mine a rich seam in cherry tipped crystalline melodic pop. - Losing Today (U.K.)
An argentinian band launched in 2001 by Juan
( Mazzola ). In the first years they got a fondness for Glam and Psychodelic Rock, today the band sounds like some kind of roots-pop, harmonical like taste of toffee. Sexsmith/McCartney/Patrick Park and a little bit of Hobotalk, thats what I find in here. Very relaxed, maby too beautiful to be suspected for Rock roots.
Well done.
The songs are brushed with sweet-tempered Melancholic kissing your ears. You can't deny the influence of the Beatles in "1983" ( many-voices / violins ).
What a pity, it is only a 6-Track Ep.
It could be longer. (ICC ) - Glitter House (Germany)
Folkpop is not something you would expect from Argentina. Maybe that's why the biography mentions "garagerock".
Absurd, if you'd ask me because on "Monsters" Baby Scream obviously
seems to have listened to the Beatles. And this is just something to let us cheer at! The band is above all at its best with up-tempo-songs such as "Slut" which sounds really summerly and happy. "Mars" on the opposite sounds quite fragile. But luckily the electric guitar comes up right on time. Here and there some Pixies-influences leak out as on "1983" for example. "Monsters" is a 6-track-EP which is already giving appetite for a full-length album. - Dreun (The Netherlands)
Started as a singer/songwriter project - BABY
SCREAM
slowly turned up to a real band - NOW putting out
with "MONSTERS" a very fulminant EP!
Singer and Mastermind Juan Mazzola creates a deep,
earnest and reflective work, basing upon his fathers
death.
It is very advisable listening to it with
eyes closed!
These 7 songs are nearly fragile - somewhere between
SMITHS, REPLACEMENTS, JAYHAWKS and also RADIOHEAD
(when they still got guitars)
They aren't creating something totally new but
totally convince with their transposition:
This band will affects you by your listening!
It is worth it, promised!"

"Monsters" mainly offers sunny powerpop songs. Popsongs with a strong Beatles-influence, but at the same time with a somewhat American sound (think of the more laid back moments of the Replacements). This EP makes one look forward to the forthcoming full length album, planned for later this year. And these songs are strong enough to justify the purchase of this very enjoyable EP. - Erwin Zijleman - Plato (The Netherlands)
The EP opens with "Blue River", a haunting melody on acoustic guitar accompanied by strings. A touch of eeriness creeps in with the abundance of minor and minor 7th chords which lend a certain spookiness to Juan’s confident vocal. His voice is at times soft and whispering, intimate even, at others harshly powerful.
"Monster" meanwhile feels as though it has more in common with Athlete, early Coldplay or something equally Britrock, with its driving percussive line and contrastingly gentle vocals. The melody is catchy, addictive, and the distinctively harmonised chorus gives us the first hint of a Beatles influence as the vocals take on a definite Lennon-esque quality.
"Mars" pays direct homage to Bowie in lyrics, pace, guitar and overall arrangement. And yet it holds its own value, neither falling into the common traps of mimicry nor turning into a claim of musical heritage. It’s a tribute made from the heart and delivered with style.
The EP’s penultimate track is a pure sing-along pop fest.
It’s sweet and innocent, catchy and hook-laden and it rises to a full blown crescendo finale.
"Gone Forever" really takes the Beatles more philosophically reflective tracks to heart with its cascading acoustic guitars and plaintive vocals. It’s a two part track which again displays Juan’s uncanny knack for finding catchy melodies, like the rest of the EP. However this track is deeper, more anguished to start with. It’s about loss, shock, and grieving. There is optimism too, which finds its outlet in the major chords, the closure of the chorus, and the pleasant upbeat guitar solo.
The second part of the track takes a more philosophical approach, reminiscent of The Beatles’ ‘Across the Universe’. Its poignant strings and guitars and tender lyrics give hope for meaning after loss and bring the EP to a natural close.
There is much to find in this short but sweet collection for the discerning indie lover.

Very listenable, nice, cosy and pleasant. Most songs are built upon simple acoustic guitar structures and mellow singing. The first song "Blue River" has a very strong, almost sad cello to complete the simple arrangement. Next song "Monsters" is the most electric with nice lyrics. It's all kind of spherical and a song like "Mars" has a very clear reference to Bowie as Ziggy. The musical skills are evident and the singing is very competent, it's not just another average mainstream indiewank band. This is a nice popish EP that you can put on at a rainy day and start smiling.

- Oscarkotj - Kick Out The Jams (Spain)

You keep me hangin' on... to the monsters – A Baby Scream tale:
Gather 'round, kiddies! So, what do you need to know about rock n roll? It is a force that is beyond ourselves, and every once in a while it chooses a boy or a girl and makes them more than they are and more than they wanna be - it paints a universe outside the realms of the everyday and opens a window to the world of the shadows that lie in between.
It isn't just about Elvis or Janis anymore – rock n roll today is about the stars that you haven't yet heard about, but carry that flame, soul and passion within them. You must seek them out, and find out for yourselves... here's a tip:
Baby Scream!, with influences such as The Replacements, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Teenage Fanclub and Radiohead, from punk in the early days, through to rock, glam, Britpop, ballads and even trash metal until finally arriving at their current intimate 'acoustic-with-strings' sound... just say, Juan!
Baby Scream!, currently based in London, was formed in 2001 by Juan Mazzola in Argentina. Occasionally a solo project, an acoustic duo with Cristian Basualdo (lead guitar) or an electric act, Baby Scream is always about Juan's catharsis, the music coming from a deeply emotional, rock n roll loving soul.
In 2005 the band released a split cd with "The Strange Flowers" from Italy. Having already released many CD's and contributed to several internationally released compilations CDs in the past, Baby Scream's 'Monsters' EP (a true soundtrack to Juan's life, written in 2005) was released in Germany in 2006 through Beyond Your Mind Records, beautifully showcasing Juan's emotional range and diverse songwriting talents.
The story unraveled... you need to catch up! At this point, the band was no longer united, so Juan took his acoustic guitar and started traveling around Europe and the U.S. promoting "Monsters", playing everywhere from a empty pub to a football match in a stadium in Norway for 5000 people... get the news, kids!
Then, in early 2007, Baby Scream (including Cristian again) recorded a new EP called "Ups And Downs", originally an ep including 2 totally unreleased Marc Bolan songs ("Song for a Soldier" and "Reality") became an LP when Juan recorded 4 new songs in Dortmund, Germany with a little help from German friends "The Cheeks" and producer "Bart El Monte".
Also in 2007, the project took Juan to L.A. to record 2 songs with Muddy Stardust (Gilby Clarke, L.A. Guns, Marc Ford) which he later released as an exclusive and limited edition single called "The Riots", selectively given away to people at acoustic shows. You should be so lucky...!
During 2007 and 2008 Juan spent some time in London, promoting "Monsters", including a very special night opening for Mark Olson (founding member of "The Jayhawks" and one of Juan's personal heroes) at "The Borderline" and looking for a new label to release "Ups And Downs".
In 2008 Baby Scream got signed to Recorded Recordings Records (U.S.A.) - "Ups And Downs" was released on December 23rd, 2008. 2 videos were shot in Argentina, one for "Mars" (also included in Monsters EP) and one for "Everyday (I Die a Little Bit)".
In late 2008, back in Argentina Baby Scream recorded a song, originally written by Rinando Rafanelli (argentinian bass player / producer of Sui Generis, Polifemo, Color Humano), called "Ojos Orientales".
The song, featuring Juan's lyrics in English, is now included on a new EP, also featuring the 2 unreleased Marc Bolan songs, later to be released as an exclusive 7 inch vinyl.
At the moment Baby Scream! consists of Juan doing solo acoustic shows, he is not living in the U.K., not living in Argentina, not living in the U.S ... he is just living his music. All hail...!
