Baby Shiver’s Boutique, brandishes a Rhodes organ, cello, Telecaster and Stripped down percussion while lead singer Kenneth otto Carney exchanged a ukulele and an auto harp as he saw fit. I was, enough times to make a note of it, reminded of George Harrison’s “Piggies,” his aristocratic put down of aristocrats from the White Album during Boutique’s set. In their sound was not only a willingness (entirely crucial) but a desire to be silly, a thin line to toe in the world of pop. But to toe it without flinching… I hear you, I hear you, I thought, tapping my foot in time.
The band’s melodic, bedroom sound was goofy and serious compliment to the setting. There was a buoyancy to the material – having much to do with the surging Rhodes, and also, let’s not kid around, the ukulele – that flourished with the quiet but relentless bongos and the undertow cello. (I trust it does the players no disservice to mildly compare this buoyancy – dare I say “cheeriness”? – to that of the Eels at their most affecting. Who listens to the Eels? I know another man…) - Joel Chaffe --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Their songs are filled with the same seemingly cute, quirky innocence, but they’ve changed. The songs are now more about being a real human. The songs speak of their relationship, or lack-thereof, to God. Maybe even of feeling like shit and equating it to be helpless and poor, or even of re-evaluating the middle class. But for some reason the bleakness of it all can be overlooked by the most wonderful melodies, and it makes you feel okay about all the injustice in the world and how f*cked up society may be.

Named after a band member’s Baby Shivers doll, Baby Shivers Boutique are an indie band who are deep rooted the Rochester music scene. Including an unusual array of instruments in their songs. They describe their sound as “tragically optimistic folk music,” - Roc Loop

OLD TIME RELIJUN!!! I am so excited about this. Old Time Relijun is a band that was born in Olympia, Washington, in 1995 and has been released ever since on the legendary "K Records" label (yes, the same label whose symbol Kurt Cobain tattooed on his forearm). But don't think of them as essentially nineties: this band stuck out like a sore, bleeding thumb from their contemporaries back then and they've only grown and transformed ever since. Too psychotic to be clearly categorized within punk or hardcore, Old Time Relijun plays an wildly energetic and fun and danceable ecstatic frenzy that is as close to noise as it is to some kind of Gypsy/Klezmer/South American hybrid. Singer Arrington De Dionyso screams and wails in Portuguese and Spanish and Italian as well as English. I've been listening to them for a while but I've never seen them live and word is, they're way better live than on their CDs. So check it.
Ian Downey Is Famous The Grievants
A couple of punk bands, sort of... or bands that refuse punk as much as anything else, or something.
PS: Baby Shivers, and in particular, Ian, I had a dream about you last night.
