Back To Nature Wildlife Refuge's Interests
|
| General | We are dedicated to RESCUE, RAISE, REHABILITATE AND RELEASE ALL NATIVE FLORIDA WILDLIFE. As well as to EDUCATE the public about the importance of protecting our native wildlife, their habitat, and their future.
***RESCUE...
Joe, an eastern grey squirrel, was found orphaned as an infant, by people. They thought he'd make a good pet, so they decided to keep him. That was, until he grew up and became a wild animal. They decided to release him in their backyard. Joe was raised to be a pet, therefore, he had no understanding as to how to survive on his own. Shortly after Joe was sent to live outside, he was shot by neighbors with a pellet gun. Joe was found by his previous owners, in their yard, dragging his back legs. A friend had to convince Joe's irresponsible owners that he needed medical attention. Their friend took it upon herself to drive 200 miles to bring Joe to Back To Nature. Joe's pellets were surgically removed...
Joe suffered permanent nerve damage in his spine, preventing him from ever fully using his back legs. Joe is now an educational ambassador for BTN. Squirrels are capable of living up to 20 years. Wild animals are not pets.
***RAISE...
Orphaned fawn, from two separate mothers, found just days apart. Luckily these two fawn have eachother. When raising wildlife for future release, it is absolutely important that they grow up together, with very little human contact. Only in the beginning, will these fawn be dependent on humans for their survival...
Under the careful watch of experienced wildlife rehabilitators, these babies will learn from eachother, how to survive on their own and through a contolled raising process. Only by view of photos will the public be allowed to see these graceful creatures in their most vulnerable state.
****RELEASE....
Orphaned Oppossums, raised by us, have spent a few months growing up at the refuge and are now ready to take on their wild home!
and so was the soft-shelled snapping turtle(treated for injuries)
...HOME SWEET HOME.....
...These raccoons arrived at Back To Nature just a few months ago. Some came in with their eyes not even opened yet! Even some with umbilical chords still attached! A likely story could go along with most, mothers hit by a car, the babies attacked by someone's domestic pet, or an unknown situation occurred with the mom and the babies were out wondering alone and vulnerable. The surrogate mothers aka licensed rehabilitators of Back To Nature, received these babies, sometimes 4 or 5 at a time, and raised them (in a very controlled manner so that these animals didn't suffer from the imprinting that humans can do). Through the careful process of raising a wild animal, they are now capable of returning to their wild home, where they will hopefully never have to encounter a human again.
****An example of an injury beyond repair....
...An OSPREY was brought in with a wing completely severed. Possibly shot by someone, hit by a car, attacked by another animal and even possibly a domestic pet. This Osprey would have starved to death trying to look for food without being capable of flying. Unfortunately, there is no room for this beautiful raptor to have a home here or at another facility. Ospreys do not survive well in a controlled environment. They will die from stress, alone. We, at Back To Nature, already house several raptors who have become incapable of surviving on their own because they had suffered from an encounter with a human. Everyday, these birds hang in their enclosures, as the public tours the facility. They have a new purpose for their life; to serve as ambassadors of their species to show everyone why they need to be protected. After evaluating this "bird of prey's" quality of life, it was sadly realized that this beautiful Osprey had to be put to rest.

..
(a baby squirrel and baby cottontail rabbit) Both bunnies and squirrels are social animals that need the comfort of other babies. During our slower season(winter), not as many babies come in together that are of the same species, however, they still found a way to keep eachother company and stay warm =)

Back To Nature Wildlife Refuge's Blurbs |
About me:

BACK TO NATURE is located in East Orlando, Florida and has been operating for over 20 years to help injured, orphaned and endangered wildlife. The refuge thrives everyday on private donations, volunteers and only 3 paid employees. Every year over 2,000 of Florida's orphaned or injured wildlife are brought into the refuge to be taken care of, in hopes that they may be soon returned back to their outdoor homes. Back to Nature is a NON-PROFIT(501-C3) organization mainly dedicated to keeping Florida's wildlife, well..... WILD!!! Some animals, however, take up permanent residency at the refuge and become a favorite to many refuge visitors. They take on their official role of representing their species that live in the wild and need to be protected. There is a unique story to go along with most all of our permanent and wild friends at the refuge. AND FOR $25 YOU CAN SPONSOR ANY OF OUR RESIDENT FRIENDS LIKE OUR~ COUGAR: Zema, BALD EAGLE: Winnie, OPOSSOMS: Pops and Phoenix, IGUANA: Spike, COATI: Cricket, FOX SQUIRREL: Nigel, RED-TAILED HAWK: Whizzer, GREAT HORNED OWL: Columbo, FL WHITE TAILED DEER: Babette, DWARF RACCOON: Pudgy, EMU: Kokomu, GOATS: Casper and Jennifer, GOPHER TORTOISE: Koi......and the list goes on...... We need all the help and exposure that we can get so that this refuge, along with many others like us, are well-known and supported by all of you! The government, unfortunately, does not fund us in any way, so we have to fend for ourselves.....just like the animals we rehabilitate. So, if you could, tell everyone you know, about us. WE ARE ALWAYS SEEKING CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS!! Come visit us and/or even make a donation! We are always planning fundraising events and trying to come up with new, enjoying ways to raise money. SO, PLEASE do us a favor and visit our official website. We'd love for you to make a donation. It's real easy to do. We have PayPal! Come visit our refuge anyday of the week, 9-4pm in East Orlando on St. Rd. 50, just 6.5 east of Alafaya Trail on the left-hand side after the CR-13 stoplight! It's *FREE* to come in and meet the animals!!!!!!! Volunteers are always welcomed and wanted! 407-568-5138
