John's Interests
|
| General | cooking, bikes, beer | | Music | I really wanna just say Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson. I love indie stuff like Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie and whatnot, but while I go through phases with that kind of music, I never quit listening to the country greats. | | Movies | American Beauty, Pitch Black, Requiem for a Dream, Love Actually, The Weatherman, A Clockwork Orange, Waking Life, Star Wars, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Across the Universe, Hell on Wheels | | Television | Battlestar Galactica, The Office, Dead Like Me, first two or three seasons of Six Feet Under | | Books | Soul of a Chef, KitchenConfidential, A Cook's Tour, The Inferno (Longfellow), anything by Anton Chekhov, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack Kerouac, Arthur Nersesian, Dostoevsky, Michael Ruhlman, Jeffrey Steingarten, Dave Eggers | | Heroes | I'm highly pretentious and have no heroes. Either that, or I have a knack for only seeing peoples' flaws and find it hard to idolize them because of that. |

About me:
I used to be a professional cook. In fact, my college degree is in the culinary arts. I earned it after moving from Texas to Pittsburgh when I was seventeen. I've lived here since and have slowly realized Western PA is as much its own country as Texas.
However, after three or so years of being a kitchen slave, I've decided to quit (or at least take a break) the noon to midnight schedule in hopes of enjoying the good years of my life more.
These days, I work for a medical company as a "data specialist" (that was on the card sitting in front of my chair at the last quarterly meeting). I'd like to think it hasn't caused me to sink into mediocrity, since I still do intense stuff like ride my bike 160 miles in a weekend, or camp out by myself in the Allegheny Mountains. It's nice to have time for things like that.
Big things for me: beer, bicycles and hating on the American car culture in general, and hanging out in the kitchen for hours at a time, cooking and eating. I'm a simple dude.
