Harlan " The Soul Man " our keyboardist / vocalist is a 1999 inductee into the Iowa Blues Hall Of Fame. He has played with The Soul Brothers, The Platinum Blues Band and many others in his long and storied career.
Byron our bassist extraordinaire is also a veteran of the Des Moines music scene. Having played with Clark Street Station and toured with Split Decision all over the southwestern United States including Las Vegas and overseas and Japan.
Doug our guitarist / vocalist is a long time musician having recently played with The Melodie Proffitt Band and before that The Motor Brothers Band.
Rick the drummer is a veteran musician having played with The Platinum Blues Band and The Motor Brothers Band.
Sorry to hear about the death of Jim Faur. He played bass for me for back in the mid 90s. He had a tough life, but when he was straight he had a sweet soul.
Matt Woods will be hangin' with the Big Dawg in the KFMG studio tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 16th, on "Big Dawg's Blues & Boogie Show" that runs from 7-9 p.m.
Matt will be discussing winning the 2007 Iowa Blues Challenge with his band The Thunderbolts, earning them a trip to the 2008 International Blues Challenge in Memphis at the end of January.
And he will talk about the brand new album by Matt Woods and The Thunderbolts, titled Be My Friend, and the upcoming CD release party at Blues On Grand in Des Moines on Saturday, Oct. 27th. Big Dawg will preview a couple tracks from the CD, plus Matt will perform a few tunes, live in the studio.
So be sure to tune in! It's going to to be a great night of Blues on KFMG!
The Central Iowa Blues Society presents the Gateway Blues Fest on Sunday, September 2nd at the beautiful Western Gateway Park in downtown Des Moines.
Gates will be open at 2 p.m. and the festivities will begin with a 45-minute harmonica workshop by Freight Train Frank Strong. This workshop is open to the first 24 people to sign up and all participants will receive a FREE harmonica!
The music on the main stage will begin at 3 p.m. with Matt Woods & The Thunderbolts – the winners of the 2007 Iowa Blues Challenge. Up next will be the funky sounds of Lil' Brian & The Travelers, followed by the powerful Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers. The headliner will be the legendary Superharp himself, James Cotton!
Your wristband will also gain you admission to the Finals of the 2007 Iowa Solo/Duo Blues Challenge, right across the street at Blues On Grand beginning at 3 p.m. And The Jeff Banks Band with special guest Janey Hooper will be hosting the After Fest Jam at Blues On Grand beginning at 9:30.
Advance tickets are only $15 (available at Blues On Grand or by calling 515-225-6638), $20 at the gate. Bring your lawn chairs, but please no umbrellas, pets, coolers or tents. Vendors will have food and beverages for sale on site.
Special Fest room rates will be available at the Hotel Fort Des Moines (800-532-1466) and the Downtown Marriott (800-228-9290). Just mention that you will be there for the Blues Fest.
