backtothewomb started in 1998. It began as the sole record label for YOUR ICON whose album Solitary Man: Bring me the Head of a God was released in 1999. It has gone on to include artists such as orphansunlight, o(h)m lightning and blackbladdergush. We are at present developing a web site for the label, where more in-depth information on the label and its artists can be found upon completion. YOUR ICON members Steven Harry Mason and Stephen Thomas Hooper released their first and only release to date in 1999. The album Solitary Man: Bring me the Head of a God consists of twelve tracks condensed into one sixty-minute durational piece. The instrumentation includes amongst others strings, piano, theremin and field recordings and meditates upon such themes as love, murder, guilt and scatology. Broken Bosom and Embrace Dionysus have been plucked from their natural habitat to provide a small taste for the willing. After seven years of obscurity the album is available once more. orphansunlight : excerpt from night: a study for listening after dark 1.0
The first official orphansunlight release takes the form of a forty-minute durational composition. Having been working over the past seven years exploring the Alchemy of composed found sound and the Heurism of improvisation, orphansunlight has committed to an on going series of studies for listening after dark. the project stems from an interest in how we perceive our interior and exterior world at night. Using feedback, found sounds and digital manipulation, this first study provides a time specific space for the listener to reacquaint themselves with themselves: in reverie, dreams and sleep. o(h)m lightning : Absolute Internal (excerpt) This is a previously unreleased improvisation by o(h)m which was recently aired by ILLFM, with them having taken over the Decibel Breach slot on Resonance 104.4 FM. It was a recording, made at Red Room Studios in 2005 using o(h)m’ main diet of two feeding mixing desks and electrical induction coils in order to explore the internal sound world of hardware electronics. This is a BTTW favourite and it is unfortunate that it is only an excerpt of it’s ten minute duration due to upload space. However, your ears may disagree. Contact BTTW for more info
