Baddis Crew was formed out of five single DJs: Herbal Q, Minista, 3 Star, Trini-T and Rap-E are household names in the Swiss Reggae and Dancehall scene. Herbal Q, an avid Reggae and Dancehall record collector, used his first visit to Jamaica in 1988 as a springboard to be a founding member of the Ganglords, a Reggae/Dancehall Backing Band which recorded two well respected albums and dozens of 7”s in Kingston in the early 90’s. In 1994 Minista decided to invest some money in two MK II and a mixing console. Influenced initially by old school Hip Hop and British HC he has developed into one of the best booked club DJ in Switzerland, rocking the crowd with his Hip Hop, R&B and Dancehall style.
3 Star’s affection for Dancehall and Soca started on a trip to Trinidad & Tobago in 1999. Dancehall classics from the 90’s are his specialtity. Trin-T’s aquaintance and well grounded knowlege of Soca and Calypo is surely no coincidence due to dual Swiss and Trinidadian Citizenship. Starting out his carreer with Hip Hop Rap-E’s fascination with Reggae and Dancehall has led to his accompaning Herbal Q as a sideman before the Baddis Crew times.
Everthing started off with 3 Star and Trin-T promoting an evening at the legendary Bar 57, called Caribbean Splash. On the turntables: Minista, Herbal Q and Trin-T. Herbal’s suggestion to found a soundsystem and including Rap-E as a member was promptly accepted. After finding the appropiate name Baddis there has been no looking back. June 2001 finds Minista promoting the first Baddis Dance at Schüür together with the mighty Pow Pow Movement from Cologne, Germany.
The night was a monster success and due to popular demand Minista’s promotion of Dancehall Xplosion is still a very well attended regular event. A trip to Trinidad & Tobago Carnival 2002 was a memorable time and served with Trin-T’s warm family connections helped to enrich the wide musical Baddis repertoire.
Once in the caribbean Baddis took the opportunuity to profit from Herbal’s previous experience in Jamaica to go over and get their first dubplates voiced.
Once Back in Switzerland the need to promote the realivtely unknown Reggae, Dancehall and Soca scene became quite clear. Untiringly they begin to play all over Switzerland and also in Germany to spread the positive vibes. The universal appeal of Baddis Crew’s music transcends political and social agendas while spreading good music and promoting peace and righteousness on earth. Baddis has big respect for Rastafari and readily acknowledge their influence on the whole Reggae Music. That’s why Baddis Crew is playing not only Bashment and Jump Up (like most of the new sounds do) but also Reggae and Roots in the tradition of jamaican soundsystems. As Jimmy London would sing: Baddis is the sound that slowly grows and grows… A highlight in their musical career was the victory at their first sound clash called >Guns Out 45 Shoot Out< in Zurich in march 2005 when they eliminated the current Swiss Clash 04 winner Ruffpack, Fred & Barney from Germany and One Blood Selector from Bern.
Baddis Crew ist aus fünf Einzelaktivisten in Sachen Reggae & Dancehall entstanden. Alle Mitglieder sind zunächst einzeln als DJs tätig. Herbal Q sammelt schon seit Anfang 80er Jahre Reggae Platten, geht 1988 zum erstenmal nach Jamaika und ist seit 1987 beim europäischen Dancehall Urgestein Ganglords (Zitat Riddim) die bereits Anfang 90er Jahre zwei Alben und unzählige 7"es in Kingston, Jamaika aufnehmen. Minista entscheidet sich 1994 sein Geld in zwei MK ll und einen Mixer zu investieren. Zunächst fasziniert von Old School Hip Hop und British HC entwickelt er sich zum vielgebuchten Hip Hop, R&B und Dancehall DJ in der Deutschschweiz.
3 Star entdeckt seine Zuneigung zu Dancehall und Soca bei einem Aufenthalt in Trinidad & Tobago 1999. Seine Spezialität: Dancehall Classics aus den frühen Neunzigern. Trin-T ist zwar Schweizer, besitzt aber auch den Pass von Trinidad & Tobago. Ihm ist somit die Karibische Musik schon in die Wiege gelegt worden. Spezialität: Soca & Calypso. Rap-E's DJ Karriere beginnt mit Hip Hop. Fasziniert von Reggae und Dancehall begleitet er Herbal Q als Sideman bei seinen Gigs vor der Baddis Zeit. Die Gründung: Tja, wie war das noch ? Und wann ? Also alles beginnt mit einem Anlass in der legendären Bar 57, organisiert von 3 Star und Trin-T. Der Abend läuft unter dem Motto Caribbean Splash, an den Turntables stehen Herbal Q, Minista und Trin-T. Herbal Q schlägt vor sich zu einem Soundsystem zusammen zu tun und als weiteres Mitglied Rap-E aufzunehmen. Ein Name wird gesucht und man entscheidet sich zukünftig BADDIS CREW zu nennen, hergeleitet von BAD, BADDEST, eben BADDIS, die Verwegensten, die Besten ! Minista organisiert im Juni 2001 den ersten Dance in der Schüür und holt gleich mal Pow Pow Movement aus Köln nach Luzern. Der Abend in der Schüür wird zum absoluten Grosserfolg. Angespornt von diesem Erfolg organisiert Minista Dancehall X-plosion nun monatlich. Anlässlich des Trinidad & Tobago Carnivals im Jahre 2002 reisen die Jungs in die Karibik. Da Trin-T's Mutter aus Trinidad stammt geht alles sehr familiär zu und her. Sie wohnen bei Trin-T's Onkeln und Tanten in Port of Spain und erleben den Carnival hautnah. Da schon mal in der Karibik setzen die Soundboys gleich noch nach Jamaika über. Hier profitieren sie von Herbal Q's früheren Aufenthalten (u.a. 9 Monate 94/95 mit Ganglords) und lassen die ersten Baddis Dubplates einsingen. Zurück in der Schweiz muss man sich zuerst wieder daran gewöhnen dass Reggae, Dancehall und Soca hier nur einen sehr kleinen Stellenwert hat. Unermüdlich spielt Baddis nun in allen Landesteilen und auch in Deutschland um positive Vibes zu verbreiten. Schliesslich geht's hier um Entwicklungshilfe einer Musiksparte die sich in Deutschland, Italien und Frankreich längst etabliert hat. Die Baddis Crew Jungs sind und wollen keine Rastas sein. Ihnen geht es in erster Linie um gute Musik. Zweitens setzten sie sich für eine friedliche und gerechte Welt ein. Baddis respektiert natürlich Rastafari sehr und weiss um seinen Einfluss in der Gesammtheit der Reggae Musik. Darum ist es Baddis auch sehr wichtig nicht nur (wie die meisten neuen Sounds) Bashment und Jump Up zu spielen sondern auch Dancehall Reggae und Roots in ihre Sets einfliessen zu lassen. Eben ganz im Sinne der jamaikanischen Soundsystem Tradition. Wie Jimmy London singen würde: Baddis is the Sound that slowly grows and grows.. Beim ersten Kräftemessen mit anderen Sounds, namentlich am >Guns Out, 45 Shoot Out< im März 2005 in Zürich, eliminiert Baddis gleich den amtierenden >Swiss Clash Winner 04< RuffPack Intl. sowie Fred & Barney aus München und One Blood Selector aus Bern.
