Music comes from the heart of the Universe. It slips out from under Its bra, and presents itself shamelessly to us, always there to feed and nurture our souls. "If I can not dance, I want no part in your revolution."-Emma Goldman. Music & Dance, one without the other is freakish. The Dance is a coalescence of foresight and spontaneity that triggers series upon series of moments, none better or worse than the last. There is no space here for better and worse. The high yelps of ceremony, the low drone of sutra study, the coarse chorus of a Jersey punk band, the wailing of a mother at a funeral. The soundtrack to our lives is composed of millions upon millions of tracks. Birds, sewers gurgling, a bandsaw, the moans of a lover, a drill sergeant at 4 am. What else can we hope for in this movie of life but one, well-contemplated still frame after still frame?

Russian (Lithuanian)/American anarchist, atheist, writer, publisher, orator, and eventual deportee back to Russia. J. Edgar Hoover, at the time of her deportation in 1917, called her “one of the most dangerous women in America.”

Emma’s first public speaking gig was in New York, and called for the total overthrow of capitalism & the inadequacy of the campaign that called for the 8-hour work day. We obviously haven’t made much progress since 1889.

In 1892, together with Alexander Berkman she planned the assassination of Henry Clay Finch, who had suppressed strikes in the Homestead Pennsylvania factory with armed guards. She even tried unsuccessfully to work as a prostitute to raise money for the gun. They believed that by killing a tyrant, a representative of a cruel system, the consciousness of the people would be aroused. This didn't happen.

Berkman only managed to injure Finch and was sentenced to 22 years in prison. Goldman tried to explain and justify the attempted assassination insisting that true morality deals with the motives not the consequences.

In 1893 she was arrested for allegedly urging the unemployed to take bread 'by force' and was given a year in Blackwells Island penitentiary. In the pen: “I was called before the head matron, a tall woman with a stolid face. She began taking my pedigree. "What religion?" was the first question. "None, I am an atheist." "Atheism is prohibited here. You will have to go to church." I replied that I would do nothing of the kind. I did not believe in anything the Church stood for and, not being a hypocrite, I would not attend.” No church for Emma.

She was imprisoned a second time for distributing birth control literature , but her longest sentence resulted from her involvement in setting up 'No Conscription' leagues and organising rallies against the first world war. Goldman and Berkman were arrested in 1917 for conspiring to obstruct the draft and given two years. Then they were deported.

Emma witnessed the Russian Revolution first hand, and during the Spanish Civil War she told a group of libertarian youth “Your Revolution will destroy forever [the notion] that anarchism stands for chaos.”

She died in 1940, and is buried in Chicago not far from the Haymarket Martyrs who greatly influenced her life.
