Born and raised in the suburbs of Carmichael, CA, BH grew up listening to his older brother’s records of the Beatles, the Who, and the Rolling Stones, which led him into exploring blues and R&B. In high school, he began studying blues and folk guitar, taking lessons from Lyle Workman (Beck, Todd Rundgren).
While getting a BA degree in theater arts and English at CSU Sacramento, BH played in local cafés and bars, performing originals as well as a range of off-beat covers like Prince’s “Raspberry Beret” and Jackie DeShannon’s “When You Walk in the Room.” He moved to San Francisco in 1992, where he received a MA degree in creative writing at University of San Francisco and co-founded with his twin brother a theater group, Theater Rhubarb.
After five years of theater production, BH tossed aside the plays of Brecht and Mishima and delved back into his stack of vinyls by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Towne Van Zandt, Tom Waits, the Replacements, the Flatlanders, the Clash, the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, the Mississippi Sheiks, and several 45s from Motown, Stax and Chess labels.
Since his return to music in 2001, he has created over 90 original country ballads, blues, folk and punk music, telling poignant but witty stories of souls dealing with their breaking hearts and their crumbling world.
His self-produced debut CD “Tule Lake” (named after the internment camp in which his father and thousands of Japanese Americans stayed during World War II) features 11 songs that focuses on the themes of loneliness and redemption, featuring characters that are either lost in the dark or out on the lam. He recorded a double CD, “Amache, Colo.” in 2006, and is currently working on another double CD, “Tule Lake, Calif.", to be released sometime in 2008.
BH has performed in cafes and bars throughout San Francisco, including Bazaar Café, the Cannery, Voodoo Lounge, Brainwash Café, Sacred Grounds, and Café International.
BH recently moved to Los Angeles, where he has performed at the Pig and Whistle and the Rainbow Room in Hollywood. He regularly performs at the Farmers' Markets in two L.A. districts -- Atwater Village and Brentwood.
