Matt Butler...all guitars, basses, vocals, guitar synth, drum machine...and anything else that makes the right noise for songs...
Influences
many, many, many...some musical, some emotional, some chemical...had some great instructors as a kid including Jim Tullio (uber-producer, writer and player...worked with Los Lonely Boys, Mavis Staples, The Band) and Ed King (Lynyrd Skynyrd)...
Sounds Like
whatever mood that strikes...you can't control inspiration so I just go with it when it hits...
To set the record straight, I have all of my hair...no wig, no piece, no plugs, no combover...it's my real honest to god hair and there is no sign of scalp through the forest...
After the band Javelin (www.javelin-band.com and www.javelin.libsyn.com) disbanded and a very short stint in the band Graphix, I decided that I was better off musically as a solo act. The name Bad Toupee grew out of a late night beer party during college when my buddies were trying to come up with inventive merchandising ideas so we could make our quick millions and retire before graduating. My idea was a merchandising gimmick and long-term graphic identity for a make-believe rock band. Each new album (that's what they were called back then) would depict the same man wearing a different hair piece...you know, the "Blonde Album", the "Mohawk Album", the "Afro Album", etcetera. And when the time came to release the greatest hits album, the cover would be a shot of the same man from the rear, opening and looking into his closet full of wigs that were worn on the original album covers. Chicago has their roman numerals, I had Bad Toupees. Not exactly high art, but certainly good for a few laughs.
With that original concept in mind, each CD title has always been a play on words that not only followed the "toupee" idea, but also reflected the state of my life at that time...so, the first CD was "First Cut Of Rug"...the second CD, "Unemployed And Balding To Death", was written and recorded during a period of time when i was "unemployed", thanks to the recession that the first Bush tried to tell us never happened...the third CD, "Out Of The Recession", was stuff that was done after getting back to work...the new, and unrealeased CD (because it needs to have more than four songs on it), "I'm Not Just The President...I'm Also A Client", plays of the old slogan of the Hair Club For Men and also plays off of "president" in that I'm now the "president" of my own architectural firm...OK, big laugh everyone...
