A estética do BaianaSystem vem se definindo não só pelo seu som, mas por toda sua concepção visual, suas formas, cores e grafismos, que traduzem e reforçam sua música, trazendo movimento e sustentação para esta linguagem. Isso se dá através do uso de formas simples, de pinturas feita a mão das barracas e bancos de festa de largo, estampas das mortalhas, carrinhos de café etc. Vem da África, da Jamaica, da Índia, mas para nós, baianos, ela é daqui. Isso pula das ruas para nosso imaginário, e aqui ela é traduzida por Filipe Cartaxo (Barreto), que traz da sua experiência, um interesse pelo popular, pelo lúdico, pela tradição em movimento. E tradição, é algo que se mantém em família.
The aesthetics of the band Baiana System has been shaped not only by its songs but also by its visual concept: shapes, colors and graphics which translate and enhance its music, bringing up a movement sense and supporting its language through the use of simple shapes. Its design is inspired by hand made paintings which decorate tents, benches, special costumes, coffee carts and other elements of the many popular annual street parties which take place in Bahia, jumping straight from the streets to inhabit our imagination. In addition, the Sound System culture born in Jamaica in the 60’s catalyzes the whole movement and reggae aesthetics, as well as do many other languages that come from hip hop and dub. The whole mixture was 'translated' to the band Baiana System by the visual artist Filipe Cartaxo(Barreto).
A cultura do Sound System surge na Jamaica na década de 60, e catalisa a todo o movimento e a estética reggae, bem como outras linguagens que surgem a partir disso como o hip hop, dub, etc. É basicamente uma cultura de rua, de interação, de movimento, que muito se assemelha as festas de rua da Bahia.
Vindo do interior, mas também com uma linguagem bem urbana e popular, Russo PassaPusso reconstruiu , juntamente com o MiniStéreo Público, Sistema de Som Perambulante, esse conceito de som de rua, de improviso, Jamaica-Bahia. No Baiana ele é o System, trazendo seus dubs vocais, letras ágeis e criando uma linguagem de interação com a Guitarra Baiana.
He came from the countryside but his language is urban and popular. Russo rebuilt, together with the MiniStéreo Público o Sistema de Som Perambulante a free-style concept of sound street which converges Bahia and Jamaica. In the band Baiana, Russo is called “System”, using his vocal dubs and lyrics to create an agile, interactive language with the “Bahian Guitar”.
Com uma sonoridade fincada no universo do Reggae, do Merengue e dos Afro-Sambas, Seco torna a situação (bem)grave. Grave e groove são sua base, e essa base apóia a sonoridade do BaianaSystem, deixando os mantras seguirem soltos, os dub flutuarem e a terra tremer.
With a sound rooted in the world of Reggae, Merengue and African Sambas, Seco brings down low, subdued moods to the scene. Deep tones and groove are his base which support the basic sound of Baiana System, letting loose its earth-shaking mantras and dubs.

É um projeto musical que tem o objetivo de divulgar e explorar novas possibilidades sonoras da Guitarra Baiana. Esta singular guitarra criada na Bahia em meados dos anos 40, foi responsável pelo surgimento do trio elétrico (grande sistema de som andante) e por uma linguagem instrumental de guitarra para interpretação de frevos, choros e outros estilos musicais que tomaram nova forma a partir da sonoridade deste instrumento.
Da necessidade de expandir estas sonoridades, tentar incorporá-las a novos contextos, abrir o leque de influências e propor um novo diálogo deste instrumento com o público surgiu o projeto BaianaSystem, onde a Guitarra Baiana é o ponto de partida. Idealizado por Robertinho Barreto, guitarrista da banda Lampirônicos e que utiliza há algum tempo o instrumento, tanto na banda como em outros trabalhos, o BaianaSystem não tem um formato definido, podendo assumir variadas formações. A idéia principal é que a guitarra baiana interaja num formato de “Live P. A.” com um DJ que assuma as bases sampleadas e/ou tocadas, fazendo inserções de sons e efeitos com liberdade de improvisos. Utilizando-se de recursos como camadas, efeitos e loops, numa concepção que também se inspira na liberdade e psicodelia do Dub.
A idéia de pensar o principal meio de divulgação e consolidação da Guitarra Baiana (o trio elétrico) como um tipo especial de Sound System (divulgador do Dub), traz uma nova forma de pensá-la, explorando mais suas possibilidades de timbragem e a interação com a produção das bases rítmicas, onde a linguagem e a filosofia das “colagens”, do re – criar a partir do existente, se tornam o desafio do BaianaSystem.
ENGLISH VERSION
BaianaSystem is a musical project aimed at spreading and exploring new possibilities through the sounds of Guitarra Baiana. This singular electric guitar - created in Bahia in the forties - was responsible for the creation of Trio Eletrico (a big moving sound system). It was also responsible for an instrumental language of the electric guitar which you will find in the interpretation of frevos, choros and several other musical styles that got new shape from the richness of the sound of this instrument.
It was from the need to expand this fullness of sound - while attempting to incorporate it into other musical genres thereby opening up a range of influences and offering the public a new dialogue with this instrument - that the Baiana System project emerged, where the Guitarra Baiana is the starting point. Idealised by Robertinho Barreto, guitar player of the group “Lampironicos”, who has been playing it for some time in the group and in many others musical projects, the BaianaSystem does not have a defined format but can assume many different arrangements. The underlying idea is the presence of a Live P.A. whereby the D.J. interacts with the Guitarra Baiana to produce a new musical arrangement. The DJ will work with the sampler and/or played bases, fitting in sounds and effects with freedom for improvisation. It uses resources such as layers, effects and loops, in a conception inspired by the freedom and psicodely of Dub.
The purpose of the project is to think about the channel of promotion and consolidation for the Guitarra Baiana (the trio eletrico);to perceive it as a special kind of Sound System (publisher of Dub) and to develop new ways of applying and relating to it. It also offers the opportunity to explore new possibilities of sounds with the Guitarra Baiana as well as investigating the interaction with the production of a rhythmic base.
The ‘mixing’ of language and philosophy and the creation of a new musical arrangement through developing an already existing one are the challenges of the Baiana System.
