Hip-Hop Spoken Word Chicano Teatro stylee. If Oscar Zeta Acosta and Nikki Giovanni had hooked up, we would be the love child that grew up listening to RBL Posse, Barrington Levy, Rage Against the Machine and De La Soul.
Formed in 1997 during a community arts celebration in its hometown, Baktun 12 is a group of artists from East Salinas, California. The group is dedicated to the upliftment of Chicano culture, art, and community. Since its inception, the group has developed its own brand of performance art, which incorporates traditional Chicano teatro and comedy, spoken word poetry and hip-hop music.
In 2006, the group developed and performed its newest work, "The Baktun 12 Variety Show." Mixing it's Teatro/Hip-Hop/Spoken Word steez with a traditional talk/variety show format, the group has staged the show twice in the Bay Area. Plans are underway to perform the show closer to its hometown of Salinas. Stay tuned for more info. Que Viva La Raza!

SAM BURGUESA AND THE PIXIE CHICKS—the hilarious, provocative, and original new musical is back on the stage at EL TEATRO CAMPESINO. This musical cabaret is set in the place where so much of the 21st century has been invented—the family garage! At the heart of it all is the touching story of a Chicana Mom trying to save her “genius” son, Sam, from losing his ball bearings. Meanwhile, Sam plays with dolls, outrageously flirting and cavorting with the Pixies in his mind. A tale of boom and bust, power and lust, provocative and heartfelt—a must-see-to-believe.
