I Wayan Balawan was born at Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia on 9 th of Sept. 1973
He started playing music at the age of 8 and founded a group at elementary school. He played songs by Deep Purple and Beatles. Bored by rock music, when he graduated from high school he moved to Sydney to study jazz guitar & vocals at the Australian Institute of Music.
He achieved a scholarship for 3 years(Diploma of Music). He became a well-known guitarist for 5 years in Sydney until he came back home to Bali in 1997, then formed Batuan Ethnic Fusion.

Balawan is an immensely talented guitarist with his very personal style.
He is a specialist of the so-called touch tapping style (like Stanley Jordan): with the fingers of his left and right hand tapping on the guitar neck he plays simultaneously bass, chords and melody, as if he were playing a piano. As if that werent enough he is able to play 2 guitars at the same time with great agility.
Extremely virtuoso he doesnt neglect smoothness in his melodic performances.
In Indonesia Balawan is considered as the best Indonesian Jazz guitar player, he plays at Tv-shows. Hes a guitar teacher and often performs at the Music School in Indonesia, he does promotion tours for Ibanez guitars and Laney amplifiers.
