BArc BaldwinCountyhuman… Representative Stephen McMillan with the Alabama State Legislature 95th District (Baldwin), August “Gus“ Palumbo, Daphne City Councilman District 7, and Fairhope Police Chief Bill Press will meet with animal advocates at the grass roots meeting on September 23 at the Fairhope Civic Center from 6:00 to 8:00pm.
Mindy Gilbert, Alabama State Director for the Humane Society of the United States, is the guest speaker. Recent laws Gilbert has been involved in are the state’s felony anti-cruelty law, ban on hog-dog fighting spectacles and to require animals to be spayed or neutered before they are adopted. The Haven and the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) are co-hosting this meeting to further protection of the animals, whether through legislation or corporate and public policy. Michael Graham, Executive Director of The Haven, encourages everyone to attend. “Albert Einstein once said that the definition of insanity is when something is repeatedly done over and over again. We can learn a lot from this one statement by uniting and creating the change we need to help create new and improved laws to protect animals.” Palumbo was instrumental in removing the Daphne City Animal Shelter‘s gas chamber in 2007. BARC! TAKING PART IN PETSMART CHARITIES® SECOND CHANCE FOR LOVE NATIONAL ADOPTION WEEKEND SEPT 10-12! With the goal of saving the lives of homeless pets through adoption, the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) is taking part the PetSmart Charities Second Chance for Love National Adoption Weekend, which runs Friday, Sept 10 to Sunday, Sept 12, 2010. Hill’s® Science Diet® and PetSmart® are the proud sponsors of this event, which will take place in all 1,160 PetSmart® stores in the United States and Canada.

BARC! is one of more than 2,000 animal-welfare agencies in North America that is participating. “Various breeds of kittens and adult cats are showcased year-round at PetSmart Charities Adoption Center at the Eastern Shore Center” remarked Sonja Presley, BARC! Executive Director.
“Benny, a domestic short hair cat, is one of our rescues looking for his forever home. Last year, someone put a litter of three tiny kittens in a cardboard box, taped it shut and left it at the Loxley ball park. Our Kitten Kaboodles volunteers rescued them and have adopted two of the kittens. Benny, the remaining one, has the most interesting face -- he looks like an Egyptian cat. His adoption fee is $55.” Cat lovers who are ready to make a lifetime commitment to a homeless pet are encouraged to visit from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; and, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Both the adopter and the organizations get extra incentives during Second Chance for Love National Adoption weekend.
Event sponsors Hill’s Science Diet Brand and PetSmart® are providing free samples to everyone who adopts. PetSmart Charities® and BARC! believe that pet adoption is critical to ending the tragedy of euthanasia – a tragedy that claims the lives of millions of homeless pets throughout North Amer
