August 9, 1926 was the inaugeral date at Lincoln Fields. (It would later be renamed to Balmoral Park) The first trainer to stable on the grounds was thoroughbred horseman Daniel E. Stewart, the trainer for Senator Johnson Camden, president of the Kentucky Jockey Club. The first horse to work out was Camden's mare Rothermel, which won the first race contested at the field. In 1942 Lincoln Fields shut down due to World War II restrictions and all races were shifted to Hawthorne from 1943-1947. A fire in the grandstand damaged Lincoln Fields while being renovated in 1952 causing races to once again be shifted to Hawthorne. However throoughbred racing returned to the homegrounds of Lincoln Fields in 1954. In 1955 Benjamin Lindheimer put together the balmoral Jockey Club which purchased Lincoln Fields, changing the name to Balmoral Park. Lindheimer was also head of horse racing at Washington Park and Arlington Park, and decided to run thoroughbred meetings at Washington park that same year, and then later to Arlington Park in 1964. In 1995 the 5/8's mile original track was iliminated to be replaced by a state-of-the-art one mile oval with a lighting system. 1998 marked the year that Balmoral Park became Chicago's premier harness racing facility when Sportsman's Park ended their harness racing, bringing all major stakes events to the park.

Thanks for adding us as friends! It is really great to connect with fellow horse owners and lovers! We are enjoying semi-retirement on the beautiful East Central Coast of Florida. We spend a lot of time with our horses, walk and ride the beach whenever we can, read a lot, attempt to eat sensibly.... and try and add a smile to as many faces as we can. We believe that PEACE is possible….one person at a time.

We would like to share the following principles that we discovered at the Center for Attitudinal Healing, in Sausalito, California, many years ago. They have made a significant difference in our lives and fine renewed significance in today’s world.
    ************************************************

    THE PRINCIPLES OF ATTITUDINAL HEALING

    1. The essence of our being is love.

    2. Health is inner peace. Healing is letting go of fear.

    3. Giving and receiving are the same.

    4. We can let go of the past and the future.

    5. Now is the only time there is and each instant is for giving.

    6. We can learn to love others and ourselves by forgiving rather than judging.

    7. We can become love finders rather than faultfinders.

    8. We can choose and direct ourselves to be peaceful inside regardless of what is happening outside.

    9. We are students and teachers to each other.

    10. We can focus on the whole of life rather than the fragments.

    11. Since love is eternal death need not be viewed as fearful

    12. We can always perceive ourselves and others as either extending love or giving a call for help

In Health, Happiness, Prosperity, Love and PEACE… and Happy Trails!

I remember you when you just a little bitsy 5/8's mile oval. I remember Rambing Willie when he stopped by. And boy, Philip Milburn had a couple of fantastic seasons there for someone with a small stable. The sunday afternnons during the fall meet were always a great time too!

    Open Pacers command Friday spotlight

Art N Soul, a 10-time winner last season and victorious in three of his seven starts this year, takes on the likes of Keystone Eli and The Pand Illusion in Friday night's featured $8,000 Open Handicap Pace.

Art N Soul is a 4-year-old son of Artscape and the Direct Scooter mare Motivation who is owned and trained by Nate Kemp and as usual will have Mooney Svendsen in the bike. He comes into this contest having set a new career standard of 1:51 4/5 in his most recent appearance at this top level.

Off at nearly 6-1 in that March 29 affair, Art N Soul was last of the half-dozen as the field reached the final bend in some snappy fractions. Svendsen wheeled him out at that point, he took aim on the leaders once straightened for home and won going away by a length and a half, coming his last quarter in a snappy :26 3/5 while shaving two ticks off his previous mark.

Keystone Eli has been on or near the top of the class for the last couple of seasons for owner Hei Mitchell and trainer Bob Johnson and will once again have the services of Ed Hensley for Friday's get-together. This guy has $132,000 in the bank and a 1:51 lifetime-best mile, which was recorded over this track last season.

The 5-year-old son of Shady Character was 9-for-35 last year and has a win and two runner-up finishes from his eight trips to the post in 2008. The victory came on March 22, when he came with cover to the drive and dug in gamely to hang a head on The Pand Illusion. He raced well in that last outing, but could not match the winner in the late stages.

The Pand Illusion has been waiting since late March to make amends for his fifth-place finish as the 1-2 choice. Rick Plano drives and trains for his wife Maryann and this 6-year-old has four snapshots on the year, including a career-best 1:51 2/5 romp on March 15. He could easily come back with a win at what should be a much better price here.

The California Sires Stakes action started up on a beautiful Friday night, on which a favorite won as expected, but another one didn't.

In the first of two 15,000 divisions of California Sires Stakes for sophomore fillies on both gaits, Smooth Jazz would debut on the trotting side just like she did when she left the races last October, that being tons the best.

Racing without a qualifier entering the event off all but six months, trainer/driver Tim Maier was a lot less concerned than his wife Denise, who owns the talented filly.

"My wife asked me when we didn't qualifier her if I knew what I was going," said Maier. "I told her that I felt that I hoped that I did, in that I had trained her down well enough for this start."

Leaving from post-position two in the field of eight and dropping in third after just a sixteenth of a mile into a :30.1 opening quarter, Maier would waste no time in moving his charge to the outside before the field had traveled 5-16ths of a mile.

"I hadn't made any pre-plans to go to the front, I just race her the way I have to race her, plus she felt good."

Quickly taking over the lead well past the three-eighths mile pole and trotting comfortably while reaching the half-mile station, timed in 1:01.2, Smooth Jazz would open up a little on the final-turn while on her way to the three-quarter mile marker, timed in 1:31.3.

Accelerating to open up by a quick three-lengths to the seven-eighths mile pole, Smooth Jazz would send a lightning-bolt message to her fellow three year olds that she has every intention of leading the band once again.

"She was strong right down to the wire and felt good doing it."

Drawing away to win ($2.60) convincingly and easily by 11-1/2-lengths, Smooth Jazz, who had $47,636 to show on her in a total show pool that had $48,366 in it, would make it seven-for-seven in her career, while stopping the timer at 2:00.4.

Three year-old colts and geldings, on both the pace and trot, were featured in $15,000 California Sires Stakes, on which the fans had it right.

On the pacing side, Star Time Kid and trainer Rick Plano would advance one spot out of the gate from post-position three in the field of six, but they wouldn't sit for too long.

"He's not a good front-end horse," said Plano. "But since it was a short six horse field and the pace was slow, I decided to move to the front because sometimes you have to give them the best chance to win."

On the move to the quarter-mile pole into a :28.3 first quarter, Star Time Kid would clear to the lead just after 7-16ths of a mile where Plano would immediately pop the earplugs of his charge.

"I just wanted to keep him rolling because he can struggle in the final-turn. Once he's out of the final-turn, then he'll pace on."

Reaching the half-mile station, timed in :57.3, Star Time Kid would trip the beam at the three-quarter mile station, timed in 1:26.4.

"I was pretty confident at the three-quarters that I'd win as long as kept to the task as I knew he'd pick it up after we turned for home."

Opening up the lead into the stretch, then opening up a little more when urged with an eighth of a mile to go, Star Time Kid would now have to deal with his stable-mate Themaninthewindow (Luke Plano), who was flying at mid-stretch.

"My horse had quite a few lengths on them and I figured somebody would have to come pretty strong to catch him at that point. I did see my other horse coming and you are always concerned when you see someone coming, but I knew the wire was coming up."

Holding on to win ($3.20) by a dwindling neck, was Star Time Kid saved by the wire?

"I know Themaninthewindow was getting to me, but I don't think my horse really likes the front. Additionally, he's a green horse, plus I don't think he heard the other horse coming.
