En agosto de 2005, aproximadamente, un grupo de amigos se reunía a compartir música y guitarrear, sin mayores pretensiones, en un fantasmal caserón ubicado en la localidad de Peñablanca (Villa Alemana, Chile). En aquel lugar tenia su residencia Claudio “Callito” Donoso, cantautor de dilatada trayectoria en la escena subterránea local. Entre los asiduos visitantes al lugar, había algunos músicos, quienes, junto a Donoso o alternadamente, interpretaban temas de diversos estilos. En muchas de esas veladas, Claudio compartía algunas de sus composiciones, y, espontáneamente, sus contertulios lo seguían animadamente, improvisadamente, usando para estos efectos instrumentos convencionales y otros no tanto, como botellas, adornos de metal y cuanto elemento sonoro estuviera al alcance. La idea era participar y divertirse. Algunos de aquellos temas habían nacido algunos años atrás, aproximadamente en 1999-2000, en el seno de la efímera agrupación CER, que conformaron el mismo Donoso, E. Huerta y R. Bustamante. Entre los instrumentos convencionales, entre otros, habían guitarras acústicas, electroacústica, eléctrica, bajo eléctrico, bongos, palo de agua, pandero, toc-toc y quena.
De pronto, nació la idea de recrear la canción “Ciudad Puerto”, en versión eléctrica. Fue así como se conformó la primera alineación de la banda, con Callito ( guitarra eléctrica / bajo / voz), Eduardo Huerta (bajo, guitarra eléctrica, voz), Francisco Castro (armónica voces/ accesorios), Alejandro Oyaneder (Quena / voz), Alejandro “Mani” Cornejo (guitarra electroacústica / voz), Ricardo Bustamante y Eddie Vera (percusiones). El tema original, respetando su estructura básica, adquirió sonoridades folk rock con tintes psicodélicos, lo cual quedó especialmente reflejado en el pasaje instrumental, con solos de quena, creación colectiva de la banda.
Con “Ciudad Puerto” participarían tiempo después en “Una Canción Pa’ La Joya”, concurso que buscaba temas inéditos, alusivos a la ciudad de Valparaíso, entre los cuales se elegiría el nuevo “Himno” porteño.
Tras esta primera experiencia en conjunto, y quedando todos conformes con el resultado final, comenzaron a trabajar en más canciones. “El Vuelo”, “La Marilachela”, “Primero” y “Sentencia”, se sumaron a la lista de temas escogidos. “Blues de Ladrona”, composición de F. Castro, también fue incorporada al (a estas alturas) primer repertorio del grupo. Las reuniones de esparcimiento entre amigos, pronto se transformaron en ensayos.
En septiembre de aquel año, recibieron la primera invitación a tocar. Se trataba de una peña folklórica a beneficio, a realizarse en una Iglesia ubicada en Belloto Sur (Quilpué, Chile). Si bien el recinto religioso y la actividad en sí misma, de rockera nada tenían, los músicos se animaron a participar. Había llegado el momento de buscar nombre para la agrupación. “Don Oso y Los Bálticos” fue unos de los propuestos, quedando, finalmente en “Bálticos”, en alusión a cierto bebestible, que nunca faltaba en los ensayos y/o tertulias de aquellos tiempos. Bajo este nombre se presentaron aquella ocasión, ante un público que no demostró mayor entusiasmo por la música de la banda. No obstante aquel tibio primer recibimiento, los Bálticos continuaron trabajando.
En enero de 2006, Iván Roberto Bustos se incorpora al grupo como baterista, alternando este rol con Bustamante, quien pocos meses después, dejaría la banda.
La nueva alineación, entre otras presentaciones, participa en el ciclo de tocatas organizado conjuntamente, por los centros culturales locales La Casa De Ladrillo y ENERGÍA, siendo invitados cinco jornadas consecutivas al evento.
En mayo 2006, Francisco Castro deja la banda para integrarse al rock blues de “La Ruleta”. Este hecho lleva a los músicos a una nueva reestructuración.
Y no sería la última.
Tras quedar entre las 12 bandas preseleccionadas, el 15 de junio de 2007 se concreta la participación de Bálticos en “Una Canción Pa’ La Joya”, con “Ciudad Puerto”, tocando por espacio de 30 min., ante una audiencia de aproximadamente 200 personas, en la cafetería de la PUCV de Valparaíso. El tema no resultó ganador, pero la experiencia fue considerada como positiva por los bálticos, pues era la primera presentación en un evento de relativa importancia mediática regional.
A mediados de ese año se produce la tercera y más dura prueba para la banda. Donoso se alejaba definitivamente del grupo. Si bien había aportes compositivos pendientes por parte del resto, el repertorio de los Bálticos estaba compuesto casi en su totalidad por canciones de su autoría.
Sin embargo, este hecho fue canalizado positivamente y provocó el pronto aporte de nuevo material original por parte de la banda, conservando solamente aquellos temas que no habían sido exclusivamente hechos por Callito, y dejando los antiguos solo para ocasiones especiales e íntimas.
Al poco tiempo se incorpora Galmier Vargas, aportando con su teclado nuevas sonoridades al grupo. Galmier también se suma en voz y, eventualmente, como bajista.
Así queda conformada la actual formación de Bálticos, quienes a la fecha, se encuentran trabajando en nuevo material, y presentándose regularmente en diferentes escenarios de la 5ª Región.

In August , 2005, approximately, a group of friends gathered together to make some music and to play the guitar, without further intentions, in a huge and ghostly old house located in Peña Blanca, Villa Alemana, Chile. The house belonged to Claudio “Callito” Donoso, experienced and accomplished song-writer and singer in local pubs.Some musicians, who, joined to Donoso to perform songs of diverse style. In many of these musical evenings Claudio used to share some of his compositions, and the guests, joined him singing and playing spontaneously. In order to improvise some music, they used conventional instruments and others not quite so conventional, such as: bottles, metallic decorations and every other device capable of producing sound. The main idea was to participate and to have fun. Some of those songs had been composed a few years ago, around 1999-2000, by the band CER , whose integrants were Donoso, E. Huerta and R. Bustamante. Among the conventional instruments there were acoustic and electro-acoustic guitars, electric bass, bongos, “palo de agua”, tambourine, toc-toc and “quena.” ( wind instrument from Northern Chile)
Suddenly, it came up the idea of transcribing the song called “Ciudad Puerto” in an electrical arrangement. Thus, it was set up the first line-up of the band with Callito ( electric guitar/bass/voice); Eduardo Huerta (bass/electric-guitar/voice), Francisco Castro( harmonica/voice/accessories), Alejandro Oyaneder ( quena/voice), Alejandro Mani” Cornejo (electro acoustic guitar- voice), Ricardo Bustamante y Eddie Vera ( percussions). The original theme, kept its basic structure, and acquired folk rock tone and psychedelic air, we can enjoy these effects in the instrumental parts with solos of “quena”, which were created by the band.
Bálticos registered the song “Ciudad Puerto” in a contest named “Una Canción Pa’ La Joya”, whose aim was to find original themes related to Valparaíso. Among the songs selected it would be chosen the new anthem of Valparaíso (Chilean city).
After this first experience, the band which was actually quite happy with the result started working again. They composed more songs, like, “El Vuelo”, “La Marilachela”, “Primero” y “Sentencia”. Also, “Blues de Ladrona”, composed by F. Castro. All these themes formed the repertoire of the band( in that period). Then, the musical gathering of friends turned out to be musical rehearsals.
The same year, on September, they got the first invitation to perform in public. It was to play in a folk fest with beneficial purposes, that was going to be set up in a church located in El Belloto Sur, (Quilpué, Chile).The musicians were happy to play on the church although it had nothing to do with rock activities. It was the right moment to find a name for the band. Don Oso y los Bálticos was one of the alternatives, but, finally Bálticos alluding to a beverage which was always present in the musical gatherings of those times. The band performed under the latter name, Bálticos, before an audience who did not show much enthusiasm for the band. But, in spite of this, Bálticos continued working.
In January, 2006, Ivan Roberto Bustos joined the band as the drummer, alternating this role with Bustamente, who a few months later left the band. The new line-up of the band participated in a cycle of toccatas organized by the local cultural centers named “La Casa de Ladrillo” and ENERGIA.
The band was invited in that event for five consecutive times.
In May 2006, Francisco Castro left the band to join to the rock blues of the band called, “La Ruleta”. This fact leads the band to a new formation, and not the last.
After leading the twelve bands selected, in June, 15th, 2007 is set up the participation of Bálticos in “Una Canción P’a La Joya”, with “Ciudad Puerto”, playing for over 30 minutes, for an audience of 200 people in the cafeteria of the PUCV University of Valparaíso. Although the song did not win the contest, the band appreciated the experience as encouraging and valuable. It was the very first public appearance of the band, in an important event of regional level.
In the middle of the year, the band had the hardest moment. Donoso left the band definitively. Although all the members of the group cooperated with musical ideas, most of the songs of the band’s repertoire had been composed by Donoso.
However, this fact was taken in a positive way by the group, and soon they produced new songs. They decided to keep the compositions with contributions of all the musicians leaving Callito’s themes only for special times.
Later on Galmier Vargas joined the group adding new sounds with his keyboard. Galmier also sings and eventually plays the bass.
That is how is composed today’s Bálticos, who, are now working on new projects and performing on different stages of the V region.
