  • Bio

I am a composer and musician and have been playing sitar since I was four. I also play a number of Indian and percussion and string instruments including tablas and Gopis. I was fortunate enough to have music in blind school in India and it has been in my life ever since. My love is North Indian Classical music . This year I presented 2 of my latest work, my new Album Goddess and a new work for an 8 piece percussion ensemble ' Taal Zindigi' . 2007 saw the release of my 3rd Classical Album "Shadow of the Lotus" with which I toured the UK.. In 2009 I toured my composition Song Celestial (for sitar, Kora, Violin and vocals) which was inspired by a chapter in the Bhagavad-Gita Gita. While I come from a traditional place I am open to experimenting and I enjoy working with other artists from other traditions. I recently played on Doves new album and performed with them on BBC Electric Proms (2009). I have worked with many artists all have taught me something (all good mainly!). You can hear my sitar on work I have done with Massive Attacks, Jah Wobble and for those who may remember Soul II Soul. . I’m very happy to do session work. Most recently I recorded sitar and dilruba on a new track by The Doves and last year with the same instruments I recorded in on BBC2 Abbey Road sessions of tracks from the Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart re recordings by Oasis and Kaiser Chiefs (amongst others). I am also part of an Indo jazz folk group called Jazz Orient which also includes singer Linda Shanovitch (also my wife) and multi instrumentalist Chris Conway. On our last album we were delighted have guest appearances by Andy Sheppard, Hossam Ramzy and Guy Barker. Do go to my web site www.baluji.com if you’d like to know more about me.
