The Slugs incorporate rock, rap, reggae, jazz and folk stylings into an original brew of music that appeals to both children and grown-ups alike. They are the original eco-children’s band and are an influence to others who have followed in their footsteps.
The Banana Slug String Band was started in 1985 by four naturalists working for San Mateo Outdoor Education and Exploring New Horizons. They established themselves as an educational children’s band, teaching children about science, nature and ecology. Their best known song is "Dirt Made my Lunch." Their album, "Goin’ Wild", a CD dedicated to the Tetons in Wyoming won AFIM Indie Award, Children’s Album of the Year in the 2000. Over the years they have recorded their albums with many notable musicians including Joe Craven, George Winston, Laurie Lewis, and George Kahumoku. They just released their latest album: We All Live Downstream.
