  • Music

I have eclectic tastes in music, ranging from Tori Amos to Weird Al Yankovic to R.E.M. Besides the above, my favorite artists are Sarah McLachlan, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Dido, Josh Groban, and Rosanne Cash. I have been known to listen to Gregorian chant (Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos), rapcore (P.O.D.), and occasionally Evanescence and Alison Krauss.
  • Movies

I like epic fantasy book adaptations such as The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, but the transition to the silver screen is not an easy one. Successful ones I have seen include The Joy Luck Club and The Shawshank Redemption. Mr. Holland's Opus and Dead Poets' Society also hold special places in my heart.

I enjoy a good science fiction movie at least once or twice a year. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Serenity were among the noteworthy films I saw in 2005. And yes, I liked the Kubrick-Spielberg collaboration A.I., even though it had an incongruously sappy ending.

Recently, I have begun to watch anime movies, and found that I loved Mononoke-hime (Princess Mononoke) and Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away). I also liked Cowboy Bebop: The Movie.

  • Television

There is not a whole lot on TV that is particularly good these days, though I love a fun sitcom such as Joey or What I Like About You. My favorite shows at present are:
    • Battlestar Galactica (the reimagined series that began in 2004 on the Sci-Fi Channel
    • Stargate: Atlantis (also Sci-Fi)
    • Lost (ABC)
I also watch Ghost Whisperer, Reba, and Smallville when I have time for it.

About me:

My name is William H. Hsu (..). I am an associate professor (since June, 2005) in the Department of Computing and Information Sciences (CIS) at Kansas State University (K-State) in Manhattan, KS, where I have been a faculty member since July, 1999. In the summer of 1998, I received my Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science (DCS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Before that, I was at The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore, MD, where I earned a dual B.S. degree in CS and Mathematical Sciences and a master's degree in CS, graduating in 1993. I am an alum of Severn School in Severna Park, MD (Class of 1989). Last but not least, I was in the CTY program at Hopkins back in 1986-1987.

I work on problems in machine learning, probabilistic reasoning, time series analysis, information visualization, and data mining. My research interests include artificial neural networks (ANNs), genetic and evolutionary computation (GEC), and graphical models of probability such as Bayesian networks ("belief networks"), with applications to commercial decision support and bioinformatics. Our open-source software package Bayesian Networks in Java (BNJ) is used by people at over 50 research institutions. See my research lab page (http://www.kddresearch.org) for papers and resources.

I teach the following courses at KSU:

  • CIS 560, Database Systems (every spring)
  • CIS 690, Implementation of High-Performance Data Mining Systems (summer, given sufficient demand)
  • CIS 730, Principles of Artifcial Intelligence (every other fall)
  • CIS 732, Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition (every fall)
  • CIS 736, Computer Graphics (every spring)
  • CIS 830, Topics in Artificial Intelligence (every other spring)

I am also a J.R.R. Tolkien and Star Wars fan, and a Tolkien Eccentric Unusual Nut Case (TEUNC). I have accounts on MySpace, Facebook, LiveJournal (LJ), Friendster and Orkut, but I am most active on LJ. LJ is better! I also have a GreatestJournal (GJ), but that is not the blog you're looking for. You don't need to see my GJ. Move along...

Feel free to add me to your friends list, but please post a comment in my journal or e-mail me to let me know, especially if you wish to be added to my list.

Cheers, Bill

P.S. : If you're wondering about the meaning of the name Banazîr, it is Westron (the Common Tongue of Men) for Samwise or "half-wise" in Tolkien's Middle-earth. This and other interesting etymologies for Tolkien conlangs can be found on Ardalambion.

William, welcome to myspace. You seem like a very interesting person. With your knowledge of IT and interest in sci-fi you've probably heard of the Singularity. I'd be very interested in your opinion of the likelyhood and time frame of the Singularity. I write sci-fi stories which I post on the internet for everyone to read for free. I don't see writing listed on your profile anywhere, but if you wanted to, or have already, written any sci-fi stories, I would be glad to post them on my website.
