JAMILA MAIA began her singing studies at the age of 9, mentored by her father, the singer and conductor Estevão Maya-Maya. The mezzo soprano graduated at EMIA (Escola Municipal de Iniciação Artística), and has developed an exceptional technique since then; gaining experience in choirs and a second version of the Cantores do Ébano group, not to mention various other groups performing in São Paulo and her 8-year experience as an actress. Jamila’s singing impresses for its sweet, devoted, and penetrating timbre. Jamila also writes beautiful lyrics for Mahalab.
MAURÍCIO VERDERAME began to play the bass in 1984, teaching himself how to play under the heavy influence of heavy metal and also progressive bass players, such as Geddy Lee, Tony Levin and Chris Squire. Later, he had classes with Paulo Padilha, Ricardo Skinovski, and Geraldo Vieira. In the many bands in which he played, Maurício forged his unique style, inspired by the possibilities he saw for the instrument, slowly developing what has become his sound. Maurício plays a double role in Mahalab with his bass, managing simultaneously to play his inventive melodies and support them harmonically. Onstage his great love and enjoyment are always enthusiastically clear.
RICARDO SALDANA was born in São Paulo and grew up surrounded by music and art, mostly by the influence of his father and his elder brother. Besides playing drums and percussion, Ricardo is also a composer, who writes about the lives of people who live in big cities and strive for an inner change. He is quite fond of good Brazilian music, and finds in it the roots for his expression, as well as in international music – Pink Floyd, Miles Davis, Santana and Charlie Parker are some of the artists who inspire him. His background as a percussionist includes participation in Anajuá, a band which played Brazilian northeastern music, and Edu Marron, a soul music project. Nowadays, Ricardo also contributes with his sensitivity and skills to the work of his brother Vinicius Saldaña, a solo artist from São Paulo.
Vocals, bass guitar and drums. This is the unusual set through which Mahalab introduces the concept of transcendental rock, the fusion of pop/rock and ethnic music elements in a hypnotic atmosphere. The band from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is formed by Ricardo Saldana (drums, percussion, vocals), Mauricio Verderame (bass guitar, vocals), and Jamila Maia (vocals). Despite their different stories as musicians, all of them share the willingness to create new sonorities and experimentations.
Alongside with its melodies, Mahalab is also concerned about its lyrics, which speak of the times we live in: global conflicts and the ones within, the universe to which we belong, and the craving for self-transcendence, for moving onwards, are some of the issues encompassed by its songs.
Its latest EP, Solar, is threaded by voices (either mighty or ethereal) that sing of human matters, while surrounded by wide, vigorous bass lines and crafty percussion that allows each song to have its own color and dimension. Onstage, Mahalab delivers its music in an intense, enthusiastic manner, enveloping its public with unforgettable performances.
Robust, yet not aggressive, inspiring, but not a commonplace. Mahalab makes music for human beings regardless of their age and location. All it asks for is the openness of ears and minds to a unique way of experiencing music, by letting your soul get carried towards a journey of sounds.

Nascida em 2005, a banda é formada por Ricardo Saldaña (bateria, percussão, vocais), Maurício Verderame (contrabaixo, vocais) e Jamila Maia (voz), músicos com histórias diferentes, mas que partilham da vontade de criar novas sonoridades e experimentar com seus instrumentos.
Indo além da proposta sonora, o Mahalab traz letras que têm tudo a ver com os tempos em que vivemos: os conflitos que existem dentro e fora de nós, o universo de que fazemos parte, e mais que tudo, a vontade de sermos melhores.
Em sua nova demo, “Solar”, vozes ora poderosas, ora etéreas cantam questões humanas acompanhadas por um baixo vigoroso e temperado com efeitos, além da bateria e percussão eficientes que dão a dimensão certa a cada canção.
