Whats better? Hardcore, punk, pop rock? Groove, swing, funk? The contemporary scene is full of options and having to make a choice is too much of a hassle. Can there be more than one choice? Sure. So thats the option SereS takes. Zé McGill (vocals), Murillo Pouca Nota (guitar), and Bruno Montana (guitar), Chokito (bass) and Flávio Turquinho (drums) live in Rio de Janeiro (Brasil), hang around Copacabana, go to the beach, and drink beer in Lapa. They are five typical cariocas, or natives of Rio (even though Zé was born in Oregon, USA). And typical cariocas end up hearing everything - since they go all around Rio, a city in which it is hard to tell where one neighborhood ends and another one begins, and in the end, its all one place.
So they listened to punk rock, George Clinton, samba, funk, reggae, ska. And when they started a band, it all came together: five minds processing all kinds of information. The best news is that it works. And very well!
Put on the CD and pay attention. Ela, the opening song, is no mystery. Straight rock, the perfect dose of pop and the trumpet played by Pedrão Selector (who signs all the metals on the CD). This cut shows one of the best things on the CD - the guitar arrangements.
Bruno and Murillo never rest. They are always after a smart riff or a cool chord. This gives the songs different layers that enrich the sound. Put like this, it may seem like an unnecessary complexity, an unbearable masturbation. But it isnt. Its simple, unexaggerated. Its all just to keep from being monotonous, just to add color, have fun, and give variety. And these guys like variety.
Once in a while they get into the groove. And they do it with authority. Saudade is the first song on the CD with this flavor. Add to this the special participation of Gabriel Muzak, who does a solo on the guitar which, for a minute, reminds us of the Chili Peppers. There isnt for a minute an intention of seeming genial, transgressing, or vanguard. But the whole time we feel that Seres want to do good work. No matter where they aim, they always hit their target. Samba Bobo (This one doesnt even need comments, does it?) is proof. Its not an orthodox samba, but it is essentially a samba. There is even a guitar solo.
The ideas are well resolved. Felicidade (with the participation of BNegão), is unusual, with a Ska beat and some crazy backing vocal. Just after this, things heat up in E Agora, Zé? (which could almost be considered the best song on the CD). Its punk rock, with distortions on the guitar. Its right on. Its an example of lyrics that could not fit a different musical arrangement. Zé shouts out, This sound fucked up my life, messed with me, left me disoriented. Rock and roll.
On the last song of the CD, Seres outdoes itself. Tudo Pode Melhorar is high quality soul with great lyrics, superbly played. Tonight Ill drink/ And tomorrow when I wake up, everything will get better. For sure, with beer or not, this CD by Seres really lifts the spirits.
