MySpace a place for friends

It all started with a crying toddler, a sleepless night, and a chance comment made to a friend.

The music started on a night not too long before Christmas, a few years ago. Mom was pushed to exhaustion and beyond, trying to comfort her teething daughter.

Out of a sleepless night, came a song - a lullaby, inspired by the humanness of the Christ Child and His mother.

"Rock my baby Jesus, sweet and loving child You're gonna save the world, but you're my baby for a while. Yes, you are the Son of God; the angels sing with joy but peace on earth can wait while you're my baby boy."

The song was a gift, a treasure. In case you haven't realized it, I'm "Mom," and amazing things started happening after that. I began thinking about the women in Christ's life...the song of Anna in the Temple, the woman who was healed by touching Christ's cloak, the woman who baked the bread for the Last Supper, the Samaritan woman at the well...and many others. These women were the inspiration for the songs in the collection which became "Women at the Well."

One day, I mentioned to my friend Diane Moore, who was being ordained to the diaconate, that I had this collection of songs I’d written about women in Christ’s life and would like to share them with her, “maybe Joshua and I could come over and share them with you and a few friends in honor of your ordination.”

Diane had a bigger idea. Before I knew it, we were planning a house concert at Solomon House, our church’s outreach house, and things were getting bigger.

We performed to a standing-room-only crowd in the house, and have continued to present the music at churches, concerts, retreat centers, private homes, labyrinth walks and other venues ever since.

Diane suggested the name “Women at the Well,” as the music represented not only the Samaritan woman who met Christ at the well, but also the many women who shared, and still share, the Living Water of Christ. In addition to presenting Women at the Well, Joshua (“Bubba”) and I have also provided music for various retreat leaders. One song from the collection, “Martha’s Blues,” was included on our blues band’s debut CD, “Blue Merlot.”

In the 8 years since we began presenting this program, the internet has grown into a strong tool for ministry and making connections. Here is a way to spread the Word – literally, throughout the world.
