* Bandcouver is a weekly local, live, original music radio show which features independently produced music from Vancouver, BC, Canada, and a few favourites from elsewhere. Hosted and put together by Mark Bignell and Arseniy Vodopyanov.
Bandcouver tells you where the acts are playing, airs their music and even, on occasion, has them in to play "live and direct from the Co-op Radio studios!"
* Bandcouver has been feeding the indie music starved airwaves for 13 years!" * Airing independent music that carves its own path.
((( HELP KEEP BANDCOUVER ON THE AIR ))) For as little as $10 a year, you can keep a much-needed source for independent music on the air.
If you love what you hear on bandcouver and want to offer your financial support to keep a unique, commercial-free, and eclectic brand of independent music on the air, drop in for a visit at Co-op' Radio at Suite 110-360 Columbia street, or the website, ( listed above ), or call during regular business hours Noon-5pm Monday-Wednesday @ 604-684-8494, or 604-684-7561 during the show: 2:30-4pm on Thursdays at 102.7 FM.
Be sure to be specific that your support's going towards Bandcouver.
Not that we like tooting our own horn, ,but, Radio Bandcouver is a 2 time winner of The Westender newspaper's Best Local Radio Show Award.
It is also the very radio show that The Pack ( The Pack AD ) and Mother ( Mother Mother ) first announced their name changes.
We've also aired acts like: Mother Mother, Rich Hope, Dan Mangan and Danny Echo years before commercial radio did.
We also play more than one song by such artists as Bend Sinister and Adeline.
We also play some fabulous acts that are rarely played or not played at all on the commercial stations like: Parlour Steps, Analog Bell Service, Wax Mannequin, St. Vincent, Bocephus King, The Bughouse 5, The SSRI's, Blackberry Wood, The Pack AD, Jessica Beach, Olenka, Aunts & Uncles, The Modelos, Great Aunt Ida, Waltz Darling, Gorgol Bordello, David P. Smith, The Racoons, Minimalist Jug Band, Petunia, Ford Pier, The Manvils, Mongoose, The Pointed Sticks, No Means No, Art Bergmann, Blank Cinema, Fuzzcat, The Dreadnoughts, Dark Blue World, Unreliable Narrator, The Fugitives and Veda Hille to name a scant few.

Happy, Small Victories
Victory Square Music Fest Saturday, August 14, 2010
by Mark Bignell
Judging by the sweltering heat, the lack of an awning for the bandshell due to an unfortunate oversight, the late start, and the small turn out at the beginning, our first Victory Square Music fest looked to be write off at first.
But, the bands grinned and bared the heat, gave fantastic performances and a decent crowd formed later. Mention must go out to Don Larson of Crab Water For Life Society, who managed to secure a small budget, ( tiny by any other festival's standards ), from The Arts Council of Vancouver, Caroline form Ray-Cam Community Centre who helped keep things in order with water and oranges for the bands and all who needed them. Cindy at IMU Productions for creating and printing the posters and handbills for the show, CiTR for producing the radio promo, and the sound people: Craig and Martin from JMS Audio, who build and run the best sounding outdoor PA's I've ever heard.
August in Vancouver usually means residents are on vacation, the heat scaring people away and the usual apathy towards original local acts, even though the 3 bands who performed this day, ( Waltz Darling, The Van Eyes 3 and Parlour Steps ), were more than proof enough that our local/independent music scene, ( as small as it is ), is more than worthy of anybody's attention.
Waltz Darling kicked off the show with their funky Eastern Block Rock.
Definitely not a band hopping on a populist band-wagon with lightweight riffs and meaningless lyrics. Their lyrics can be quite dark with stories of unrequited love, bizarre obsessions that refuse to fade even after death, and the declaration of "not enough joy" in the world to lighten the proceedings up again. But don't let that scare you away. Waltz Darling also lay down some of the funkiest bass and guitar riffs ever offered to a more rock-based genre. If you like Gogol Bordello, Talking Heads, The Clash and Nick Cave, Waltz Darling finely compliments these acts.
They also get their message across without overwhelming volume. Not that I don't like overwhelming volume at the best of times. I can say that for all 3 bands that played this hot August afternoon.
Waltz Darling are even known to partake in a cover of some of these bands, as they did with Talking Heads' "Sugar On My Tongue".
Atila Breti is a charismatic frontman as he sways, jumps, points, gestures and occasionally straps on a guitar to fill out the rythum section. Rich Katynski keeps a tight groove down on the bass, quite often opening the songs with his highly skilled riffs and runs. Robert Medic quite fittingly compliments with his economical guitar phrases. Not flashy ,but, an essential part of the songs, adding atmosphere to Atila's sonic pictures.
Micheal Nathanson is easily one of the best drummers in Vancouver. Knowing when to bring in an exhilarating barrage and when to sit back and keep a solid, steady groove.
They have a new CD out now called: "Songs From Different Time & Places". It's well worth your hard-earned coin. Find out more about this unique band at: www.myspace.com/waltzdarling.
The next act featured one of an unfortunately dying breed of boogie-woogie piano players in Vancouver. The Van Eyes 3 features a master of keyboard: Michael Van Eyes.
A longtime veteran of the Vancouver music scene. The mind-bogling skill he possess is a thing of beauty. He makes it look effortless as he glides through such rock and roll chestnuts as Eddie Cochrane's :20 Flight Rock" and Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me".
Ian Tiles on drums is not to be ignored, as he is an integral part of Punk-Rock legends The Pointed Sticks, just back from a successful Japanese tour. He's also quick with quip, taking a few good-hearted shots at Micheal like: "Well usually at this time ,( 3pm ), Micheal's usually having his siesta." , "C'mon Michael, play harder. No, not louder, harder! " and when Michael asked the audience what kind of a song they wanted to hear, Ian chimed in with: " Micheal, you should know what to play. Don't ask them."
To round out the trio, Ron Scott filled out the sound with some tasty rockabilly- inspired riffs on his very Jazz-master/Jaguar-looking Danelectro guitar. He's been around too.
So this trio knows how to entertain, including a parody of a song The Rolling Stones covered early in their career: "Time Is On My Side". Ian reminds Michael that: "No. It's Time AIN'T on my side. No it ain't." The Van Eyes 3 provided a fitting bridge between Waltz Darling and the headliners: Parlour Steps.
Parlour Steps are a band very deserving of the attention they're getting recently.
The 5 piece recently showcased at such important events as South By Southwest and are scheduled to play Bumbershoot in Seattle this year and are getting notice from one of the 2 new commercial radio stations in Vancouver, The Peak. But, anyone in the know in Vancouver is aware that shows like Radio Bandcouver on Co-op radio, have been airing Parlour Steps' music for the better part of a decade.
They proved once again, they're one of Vancouver's most original bands. A sound that would fit snugly between XTC and Arcade Fire. But without fear of exploring quieter, more acoustic settings, much like XTC did.
They've been through many a swapping of group members, finally setting on their current 5 piece of Rees Haynes on lead guitar, Rob Linton on drums, Julie Bavalis on bass and Alison Maira on keyboards, helping mainstay, Caleb Stull, flesh out his ideas.
Caleb has transformed from a rather reluctant leader, to a more humourous and whacky one onstage. At one time, having fun with the fact, the sun was frying his electric guitar and throwing out its tuning...or was it.
Alison is a wise choice for the band, contributing some imaginative keyboard melodies and timely squacks, which provided entralling interplay with Rees's intricate guitar argeggios, swells and runs. Alison's also a fine back up vocalist, picking things up with bassist Julie on the "da da da's" on "Ring That Bell". Julie provides a simple, no-nonsense base for the songs that wouldn't be quite the same without her subtle contribution.
Drummer Rob Linton is a study in knowing when to be aggressive and when to be skillful. He never overwhelms the band. His jazzy ,but, not too jazzy backbeat is an extremely effective and a vital ingredient to The Parlour Steps' sound.
The highlight of their set was the stretching out at the closing of "Yesterday's Tomorrow" from their latest: "The Hidden Names".
The false stops and starts lightened the mood of a well-written, melancholy tune. Caleb's yelp of "Oooo. Stop Me!" capped off a fine set.
This first Victory Square Fest was a fest of happy, small victories indeed.

The beautiful Crab Park at Portside. Let's keep it ours!
"KEEP PORT LANDS IN PUBLIC HANDS"
________________________________________________________
Crab Park at Portside, located at the foot of Main Street, just west of the blue overpass, ( where we hold the annual July 1st Festival ), is the last piece of undeveloped 'public' waterfront land in Vancouver.
A private company wants to build a stadium/entertainmant facility in its vacinity without the people's approval. This will severely compromise the park's natural beauty and destroy the immediate neighbourhood.
We want the land to remain in the hands of the public, and continue to be available for the benefit and enjoyment of all citizens. This is 'public' land, not private as the some in the media have mislead you to believe.
'Public' land shouldn't be developed without the public's input. This is your park. Let's keep it that way. You can learn more about the park and what it's about here, here, and here, and offer your support to keep a much-needed waterfront greenspace intact: here.
Hosting, supporting and promoting new, original talent in independent Roots, Rock and Pop music. Looking to network with other people to increase profile and offer them some stellar music in exchange.

Hi,
Just wanted to invite you to our Vancouver album release show.
Instead of a typical evening show, we were able to organize an outdoor matinee at 2pm on Sunday, October 25th right in the heart of Vancouver!
It's at a place called 'Le Mirage' and its a converted 48 passenger coach and surrounding gardens at 345 E 1st Ave (across from Artech Lofts).
There will be homemade perogies, ethically raised pork, home made beer, hot chocolate, and several musical acts, including Acres and Acres, Jon Mckiel, and Klarka Weinwurm (all from Halifax).
I can't wait for this show.
Tell your friends!
Dave
