For the love of all that is good and decent and righteous! How might one define Celtic Insanity?
Exhibit A...
Did someone mention "Out of the Frying Pan"? It’s got that infectious line you’ve got to sing: "The music keeps us drinkin’!" Sing along at home. You know you wanna. From the Irish Rock Fest at Connolly’s in NYC on 12/2/06.
From the [ Irish KC ] Blog: "Bangers and Mash is a phrase I became used to only through reading English comics, and perhaps fittingly the band Bangers and Mash here remind me of excellent English folk-rockers Oysterband."
From FolkWords: "Do you want to dance fast enough to rip up the floor or weep into your beer until it overflows? Then [Bangers and Mash] is the band to see."
From Inside Connection: "Celtic-rock band Bangers and Mash...played a set that was so high-energy that fiddle player Deirdre Woodford actually joined members of the audience for a bit of Irish stepdancing during one of the band's impressive instrumental passages."
Aiden, age 11, during a show on 3/11/07: "I've been listening to a lot of Irish bands recently. You guys beat them all."
Mayor Paul Pontieri, of Patchogue, on 2/29/08, in reference to the gig at the Hazy Moon (2/23/08): "You guys were [absolutely] terrific!"
Charles McKenna in the March 2009 edition of the Irish Gazette:"Bangers and Mash is great."
We, Bangers and Mash, were born in the men's room of a local pub. Rent-a-Beat, our drummer, went into the can to relieve himself and, above the urinal, saw an advert for an "Irish Night," which featured food like corned beef and cabbage and, surprisingly enough, bangers and mash. The name we had been using, Seabreeze, was cast aside, and we became Bangers and Mash. It's a name that reflects our collective musical ability and that has some innuendo, which is always a major selling point; isn't it?
If I must identify a birth date for the band as a group of brave, or foolish, souls, then I'll give to you 9/17/03, which was the night I took the microphone for a full night for the first time. (Distinct memory: I thought I was going to die after the first set; I couldn't flippin' breathe! And I had two sets left! How did I survive?) The line-up was Seth on bass, John on drums, Shawn on lead guitar, Caitlin on fiddle, and I on vocals and rhythm guitar.
We've traveled all over Long Island, as far north as Maine, and as far west as Ohio. We even played The Knitting Factory in NYC during a blizzard! Ah, to snow us is to love us... As one of three Celtic rock bands on Long Island, we've found and continue to find ourselves in serious demand.
We've gone through a few changes over the years. Nothing stays the same, after all. Deirdre came on board to play fiddle in 9/04 and was thrown to the fire during a trip to Providence, R.I. She was our featured player during two exciting festivals in East Durham, N.Y. and in Patchogue, L.I. (2005). We've shared the stage with big names like Black 47 and Tommy Makem. How can you beat that? Shawn moved on during the summer of '05. As a result, we played as a four-piece for a little over a year. In the fall of '06, we added Chad, an electric lead guitarist, to our line-up. A vet of the L.I. rock scene, Chad brings a powerful punch that perfectly complements Deirdre's blazing fiddle.
Bangers and Mash have a unique sound that kicks the typical Irish/Celtic music up a notch. (Sorry, Emiril. BAM!) We mix contemporary Celtic rock covers (Saw Doctors and The Pogues, for instance) with rocky versions of revered Irish songs (including a hard rock--dare I say metal--version of "The Fields of Athenry"), high-energy tune sets, and catchy, powerful originals (the most popular of which is "Eclipse," which is featured on this page). There's something for everybody at a Bangers and Mash show.
Long Island is a wasteland of rock cover bands and karaoke. We are the Mad Max of the music scene, and this is our Thunderdome.
Please add Bangers and Mash as a friend. Let's spread the word!
