Chicago based jazz/funk/blues sextet Bangers and Mash are fronted by Brit saxophonist Michael Jackson and former Liquid Soul trombonist John Janowiak with bassist Greg Nergaard, pianist/vibist Andrew Zallar, guitarist Aaron Koppel and drummer Gil Alexander.
Jackson and Janowiak first worked together in acid-jazz groups Peking Turtle and Barnacle Soufflé and have had a long running residency at Morseland in Rogers Park with Bangers and Mash.
The group play Jackson’s eclectic originals which filter a love for funk, blues, pop/rock, reggae, ska and other accessible forms underpinned by a basic passion for jazz and in/out improvisation. The set is peppered with covers made famous, or semi-famous, or hemi-demi-semi famous by the likes of Don Pullen, Eddie Harris, Stephen Sondheim and Elvis Presley.
B&M, in various incarnations, has played such Chicagoland clubs as The Velvet Lounge, Katerina’s and Bill’s Blues and will be in the studio in 2009 to wax a Bangin’ debut CD.
