Just wanted to let everyone know of the premiere of "King Corn" on PBS on April 15th. King Corn is an awesome documentary which goes in depth on what the farming industry REALLY does with all that corn grown here in the U.S. I HIGHLY suggest that you catch this movie! It is really eye opening, especially to those of you who are still confused about what HFCS is anyway! Thanks and stay healthy!

This campaign was started in Arizona in August 2007 in order to ban High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) from everyday foods.

HFCS Info:

-High fructose corn syrup was developed in the 1970s in order to prolong shelf life of everyday goods. It is used in most packaged food items including (but not limited to): candy, cookies, potato chips, sandwich bread, condiments, crackers, canned fruit and vegetables and just about everything else.

-When tested on lab rats, HFCS was known to cause male rats to never fully develop testicles, and caused female rats' hearts to expand rapidly until they burst (Hartmark-Dounas). HFCS also caused extreme obesity among lab rats.

-Because HFCS is made from fructose (a sugar substitute) as opposed to glucose or other natural sugar products, our bodies cannot digest it properly. Instead, HFCS is transferred through the liver in order to be digested. This results in a higher production of fat cells, which dangerously increases one's cholesterol (Hyman).

-HFCS is also associated with increased insulin resistance, increased calorie intake, impaired metabolism, weight gain, and high blood pressure (Hyman). In fact, HFCS is directly linked to the increasing rates of obesity in the US.
