  • Bio

The Diversity Coalition Force is a project founded by Master African Percussionist Abui Baraka (aka) Africa. I was born in Southern Sudan on January 1st, 1974. Ever since early childhood, music and I have been soul mates. Music is my culture. I was born and raised learning and mastering traditional Sudanese drumming from my father as well as other traditional styles of African music including Nubian and Arabian rhythms and vocals. I also was raised singing and drumming in the Catholic Church choral which traveled from place to place around Eastern Equatoria, the region of the Sudan from which I came. Due to the horrific war in Sudan, much of my childhood was stolen from me. By the time I was eleven, my father, and many other relatives and family members had been killed. I was forced to leave home with nowhere to go, lost somewhere in rebel territory. I was witness to death on a regular basis and suffered from being shot and wounded myself. The situation in my homeland worsened year after year and at the age of eighteen, I realized the futility of my life and decided I would fight to find something better, for my future and for the future of my children and my family. Fleeing to IFO refugee camps throughout Uganda and Kenya, I was finally accepted in 1995, by the United States as refugee and on June 16th of the same year entered the United States into Portland, Maine. After many years enduring and fighting in the terrible war, which continues in Sudan today, I am joyful to be able to follow my dream as a musician. The pain and sorrow of my experiences are still evident in my music. My songs are a cry from the heart of a young Southern Sudanese tribesman. They reflect the loss, dehumanization, and brutality of war. I sing for the villages burned, children killed, and the families that have been blasted apart. Yet, my overriding message is one of goodness. I am trying to relay a message of hope, rather than bitterness and despair. The mellow rhythms and harmonies of Afro-Reggae music are filled with the purity of love and a message of peace for the lost children of Sudan. Children who wander the deserts of Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya looking safety and a place to stay. I do have a wide variety of experiences playing percussion which is building day by day. I have played alongside Drummie Zeb, of the Legendary Wailers. My debut was in 1998 in Portland Maine where I opened up for Yellowman and appeared on Channel 6 News the next day, being interviewed about my goals and my message. I have performed well over 60 times and have played at many different venues ,including Babson College in Massachusetts, Rhode Island College and at the Hope Festival at The University Of Maine at Orono. I have also had the privilege of sharing the stage with The Wailers, John Brown’s Body, and Jimmy Cliff to name a few. I have also performed at various venues including clubs, theaters, festivals, weddings and private parties. As well, I have spoke at various state schools and colleges about my culture and offered drumming for those who are willing to learn. As my mission continues to grow, I continue to search to find the best element in which to express the message of love, peace and unity which seems to be hard to find in these trying times. My message is relayed through my music, which is heart-felt and is a clear view into the soul of a humble African. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the above information. HOW ARE YOU,i am just stopping by to see how you been doing.i hope every
thing is alright with you and all the peace lover around the world. like once said, life with out safety is nothing.that is
exactly what's happening in Sudan to day.No body is safe or feeling
safe all over Sudan, from the south to the north, from the east to the
west.so i called all of you who believe in peace & Justice,to stand
up for what is right, and be truthful to you self and to the Sudanese
people, let the new Sudan nation be born now, rather then tomorrow, give
the people of Sudan a choice to either join the new Sudan,or remain
with the old Sudan two country living side by side,so we can finally
have a true ever lasting peace in this part of the world,i am not
afraid to say what is right nor should you, because we have nothing to
fear but fear, it's self.may god bless you,may god bless the new
    Sudan. THANKS
