Barbara's Interests
General
Politics and current events. Ultra-liberal progressive, generally. Go straight through to communism, then take a slight left - that's typically where you'll find me.
I also love live music, though I don't get out there so much these days.
Mostly I just try to stay awake.
Music
I'm ashamed to say I don't keep up much with the music scene - that's right, I'm officially old.
I'm listening to a lot of Ben Folds and Barenaked Ladies these days, along with perennial favorites Billy Joel and The Doors.
My car usually has Cake, The Cure, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, and/or Rob Zombie in the changer, along with various soundtracks and the occasional Weird Al album. It's gotta be loud or funny (or both) to keep me awake while I drive!
When I want something a bit more mellow, I put on some Joshua Radin or Colin Hay, who is a frickin' genius.
Other than that, I just listen to what strikes my fancy that day - which could be punk, emo, folk, 80's pop, 60's r&b or psychedelia, 70's funk, old school rap, 90's grunge... Just about anything except contemporary country. I don't know why... I just tend to avoid it.
Here's what I'm listening to this week:
Movies
I dig anything made by Christopher Guest, Kevin Smith or the Coen brothers.
I always appreciate a good comedy, be it deep and thoughtful or shallow and silly. I liked 40 Year Old Virgin, Anchorman, and Dodgeball quite a bit.
I do enjoy the occasional drama, too. The Godfather films and Jaws are among my all-time favorite films, along with classic comedies A Fish Called Wanda, Shaun of the Dead and Young Frankenstein.
Television
TV rules my life lately, so it's hard to pick just a few. We plan our week around our mutual favorite shows: House, Scrubs, The Office, My Name Is Earl, Heroes, and How I Met Your Mother.
We really enjoyed most of USA network's summer series' this year, especially The 4400, Burn Notice, and Psych.
We still watch a lot of Buffy, Angel and Firefly, and would probably watch Joss Whedon cleaning his bathroom if it were available.
I'm still mourning the demise of The Sopranos and the very dearly departed Arrested Development. And I am SO missing Flight of the Conchords and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Here's my new Scrubs music jukebox - every song on it was featured on the show. There's only room for 75 songs, plus some songs I wanted weren't available, so there are a few gaps. Over all, though, I think it's a good collection. The songs are arranged in order appearance on the show. Enjoy!
Books
I read mostly nonfiction, usually politics or true crime. I've been into Anthony Bourdain's books recently, and would highly recommend them. He mostly writes nonfiction accounts of his days as a chef and his subsequent travels in search of exotic meals, but he also has published some fiction. Frankly, I think I'd read anything he wrote, even if it's just scribbles on a cocktail napkin.
I also read a lot of true crime - just whatever I find at the library or Half-Price Books. My taste in fiction is a bit eclectic, ranging from Dracula and The Stranger to the Harry Potter books and anything by Jane Austen.
Heroes
Keith Olbermann, Bill Moyers, Jon Stewart, Bill Maher and anyone else with the guts to stand up to the Wrath of Karl and speak the truth (even if it's the truth through jokes).
This is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time:
About me: Graduated from Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis in 1989 (gulp!), then went on to Ball State University. I married my husband Mark in 1994, and we built the house we're in now in 2003.
No kids, but my parents moved in with us when Dad retired, so we could all pitch in to care for Mom, who is disabled and often needs assistance. My sister also brings her family to stay the weekend with us about once a month, so our house is rarely empty.
Here's some video of my niece & nephew, who decided to put on an impromptu Christmas play for us after our annual holiday extravaganza. There's not a lot of character development, and the story has some plot holes, but darn it if those kids aren't cute!
Check out my new ginormous slideshow with photos of my whole family:
As it turned out, I've probably needed almost as much assistance as Mom has. I've been unable to work due to fibromyalgia for several years now. Poor Dad - stuck with two gimps for the price of one!
The biggest impact my condition has had on my life is that I have slowly lost touch with most of my dear friends. That's why I'm here on MySpace - hopefully I will reconnect with at least a few.
Who I'd like to meet: Old friends from school and work - I miss you!! Hopefully along the way I'll pick up some new friends, too.
I've linked to some clips of my favorite shows, movies, music, or whatever else I'm into this week. I plan to change these up as much as possible, so be sure to check back often!
This is my Take A Stand advocacy section. I will post banners for worthy causes and candidates who reflect my views. I encourage everyone to do the research on the issues and Take A Stand:
