“Bárbara Martínez Bárbara Martínez has been performing since she was a child, debuting as a singer at The Metropolitan Opera at 10 years of age. Born in Venezuela to a family of artists, including singer/actresses Libertad Lamarque and Morenita Rey, she spent her youth performing in opera, off-Broadway and film in New York City.
“Bárbara has been performing in flamenco shows in New York for the last 10 years, both as a dancer and more recently as singer. She danced for several years at The Metropolitan Opera in Zeffirelli’s productions of Carmen and La Traviata, she sang for Pilar Rioja at El Repertorio Español and she has danced as a soloist in festivals at Lincoln Center, Town Hall and Symphony Space sponsored by the World Music Institute. Bárbara also performs with Spirit of Sepharad, Pasión y Arte, Gazpacho Andalú, Andrea del Conte Danza España, Sol y Sombra, Oscar Valero Company and Arts Flamenco.
“She can also be seen performing in non-flamenco projects, such as the Brazilian group, Brabop, led by the legendary Carlos de Seixas, the contemporary Colombian group Coba, led by Sebastian Cruz and Plural, rising Venezuelan Grammy-nominated composer Gonzalo Grau's newest project. Bárbara is also a founding member of Fortvna Productions, which has staged a trilogy of avant-garde musical plays by Amelia Arenas: Hell, Confessions and Dreams based on the writings of Dante Alighieri, St. Augustine and Sigmund Freud.
“Bárbara has had the pleasure of working with artists such as Marco de Ana, La Conja, Pedro Cortés, El Costi, Alfonso Cid, Antonio Hidalgo, Carmen LaSalao, La Meira, Raul Ortega, La Repompa, Pilar Rioja, Nelida Tirado, Grammy-winner flutist Dave Valentine, Luis Vargas. She also recently had the honor of teaching master classes in flamenco dance for The Cirque du Soleil.
“Bárbara recently received a scholarship in 2008 from the famed Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville, Spain for study in flamenco singing. She has also studied jazz vocal technique and theory with Barry Harris, theater at The New York Actor's Conservatory and Kodály Method for Music Education at New York University. Bárbara is an Honors graduate of Brown University (Class of 1998.)
