The Mystics EP is a significant departure from some of his more pounding creations, a relaxing and atmospheric affair best suited to lying in a darkened room or roaming through mystic wooded areas, climaxing with the glorious 'When Night Falls'. MISTABISHI-PRINTER JAM (BARBARIX REMIX)
After the massive success of the incredible debut album “Drop”, the Mistabishi story continues with this stonking bass heavy dubstep remix from shooting star Barbarix. With over one million hits on YouTube for the original, and being Colin Murray’s record of the week on Radio One - the demand for a release on this remix has been phenomenal. Hearing Mistabishi’s cranky dnb original, young dubstep upstart Barbarix couldn’t resist taking the twisted Epson work out into his studio and outputting his own print-quality, vinyl-ready dubstep version. Making its way into the hands of Radio One’s deadly duo Nerm & Dcode the remix was brought to the attention of the Hospital crew who duly got on the blower to Barbarix to make it official. Just like the original tune, this remix has developed a life of its own, and even though it sets out its stall at around the 140bpm mark, it’s still been finding its way into the sets of some of the biggest d&b DJs around – inlcluding smashing the dancefloor to bits at Hospital’s Matter residency. Available to download 24th July & limited edition green vinyl out 27th July
At the age of eighteen Steven started producing Happy Hardcore which led to him DJ’ing all around the Midlands. Then he heard Mary Anne Hobbs on her BBC Radio1 show. The sound she was supporting totally changed his whole outlook on music and made him realize that you don’t have to stick to certain formulas to make good music. This is when he started producing his own interpretation of Dubstep, IDM, Ambient and Sci-fi Glitch under the guise of Barbarix.
After a lot of focus and hard work developing his sound Steven finally felt it was time to send some of his production work out for feedback. Barbarix debuted with a ten minute long excursion entitled ‘Incisions’, which was cleverly put into three sections; Parts 1, 2 & 3’.Mary Anne Hobbs played one of the tracks on her BBC radio1 show giving Steve the confidence to move forward. In 2008 Mary Anne Hobbs again supported the Barbarix sound by championing the track ‘Lucifer’s Happy Hunting Ground’. She described the track as ‘deeply cinematic’. This track was the title track off a four track EP which is available on a Belgium net label called Entity.be, who has had over fifty releases to date. Entity also signed ‘Masicluar’, a 200 bpm glitch track that featured on ‘Vortex’, an album compilation to celebrate their 50th release.
What followed was airplay on a number of internet radio stations in England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Florida, Atlanta, Spain, Greece, Belgium, Russia and Ukraine. Then came another break as Barbarix’s tracks got supported on the well-respected Electronic Explorations podcast. Rob Booth who runs the organisation and presents the show was so impressed with the music Steve was producing, he asked him to do an exclusive thirty-five minute mix of his own music for the show. Rob then recommended that Steve get in touch with Net-Lab, a free download label based in Brighton who had released EP’s from the likes of Escapee Planes, iTAL tEK and Ebola. Net-Lab is now set to release Barbarix’s ‘Stay Still’ six-track EP in the near future.
Steve was also a top ten finalist twice in the Carbon Logic competition where listeners voted for their favorite top ten tracks which where uploaded over a three month period. Carbon Logic's Logical Publishing, has put forward two of Steve's tracks to hopefully be used in the new SKINS series on Channel 4.In December 08 Steve then did his first guest mix and live interveiw on Saad Chishty's show 'THE BEAT' Dallas Texas' number one Hit Music Station 104.9 FM!" Steve played an hour set of all his own tracks and absolutely smashed it.Since then he has had regular plays on Radio1 and the Asian network by Bobby Friction & Nihal and Radio1's 'IN NEW DJ'S WE TRUST' DJ Nerm. 2009 has kicked off with a bang for Barbarix. The biggest highlight so far was being a Radio 1 introducing artist on the Bobby Friction & Nihal show Jan 09
Now Steve is not only getting airplay but his music is getting accepted and appreciated by the biggest radio station in the world Radio 1. 2009 is going to be a big year for this talented producer/DJ, as he is without a doubt one of the most adventurous, original and diverse producers currently on the scene. Barbarix, get to know the name and get to know the sound. BARBARIX HAS ARRIVED!
The new bit's are firing on all cylinders, Hazy maze has a badass swagger to it - really nice swing to it, Bass Rocker wouldn't sound out of place in a caspa set and the light years remix has a nice euphoric feel to it. Big up, jah rastafari etc. hope your good!
