Folk/Roots group Barbary Wine has been cultivated out of the musical kinship and deep friendship of Tina Mendicino and Pat “Doc” Roberto, who share a native soil of Vandergrift, in the Alle-Kiski Valley of Pennsylvania. They are of the like mind that music is a Barbary Wine, a tonic, with the ability to enflame the wild spirit, as well as to heal the ailing soul. Doc, a Podiatrist by trade, began playing finger-picking style guitar at the age of 14. His taste and style has evolved out of Latin Flamenco, Deep Southern Delta Blues, Celtic, and American Singer-Songwriter music. He is a veteran host of open stages in Greater Pittsburgh, and has previously played with Nicole Belli and Shadowcasters and as acoustic duo Nicole and Doc. Tina, a receptionist in Doc’s office, comes from a strong Literary background, and has long turned to music for it’s lyrical storytelling value. A long-time closet vocalist , she was inspired to publicly develop the medium of her voice upon collaborating with Doc. Having revisited the musical education of her youth, she graces the group with the sweet & soulful sounds of the flute and tin whistle. Notably unique is the duo’s vocal coupling. Doc’s voice is deep&honest-from the gut, while Tina manages to sound at once sweet and sultry. Paired they create a multi-dimensional harmony which fluctuates from tension to accord.
