Band MembersThe Jewel by Barb Elyett

The Jewel is one of the songs from my album "The Simple Side." It was inspired by a quote that I read by Joseph Campbell that said "The duty of every individual is to find his or her inner truth, the jewel point, or Christ consciousness and bring it to the world in living an authentic life." - Enjoy!

THE SIMPLE SIDE was produced by award-winning producer and engineer, Bill Buckingham (Carolyn Arends, Rita MacNeil) at The Palace Studios in Vancouver, BC.

The Hammond Organ and additional piano on the album were played by super talented Vancouver musician Dave Pickell and the additional background vocals were recorded by Gord Maxwell, another extremely talented Vancouver musician. And what can I say about multi-talented, amazing musician Bill Buckingham who was the backbone of this project and provided the bulk of instrumentation on the album.

Barb's Bio

“A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be." - Abraham Maslow

This statement so perfectly describes the heart and desire of Contemporary Christian songwriter and singing prowess, Barb Elyett.

Passionate would be an understatement when it comes to Barb's flair for music. Her voice is nothing less than dynamic and drips with conviction as she delivers songs that grab the attention of listeners. To see Barb perform is to experience her child-like, transparent nature that effortlessly exemplifies Maslow's statement " a musician must make music if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself."

Following the lead of artists like Loreena McKennitt, Barb established her own record label, Aleta Records, on which she recently released her debut CD, The Simple Side. Working with award-winning producer and engineer, Bill Buckingham (Carolyn Arends, Rita McNeil), at The Palace Studios in Vancouver, BC, Barb has truly taken her talent to another level.

10 out of the 11 songs on the album were written by Barb and the11th song is a self-arranged version of The Lord's Prayer that can truly blow your socks off! Combining Barb's incredible ability for introspective, thought provoking lyrics, transcendent piano-based melodies, accented by a voice that contains the conviction of a preacher, Barb's album The Simple Side is sure to be timeless and undoubtedly a mainstay in CD players for years to come.

The title The Simple Side arose out of Barb's own desire to get back to the simplicity of knowing who she truly was at her core and expressing that. The more she searched, the more Barb started recognizing a oneness in her quest that pointed to God as the ultimate source of simplicity. Each song on the album therefore, contains a scriptural "key" that opens a door to the "simple" or God-side of life. To know where she was and where she is now with her music is to understand why Barb is often quoted as saying "no music...no life."

Throughout her journey, Barb performed on numerous occasions by invitation at Christian conferences and events and was a soloist for the Vancouver Outreach Community Soul Gospel Choir in which she performed at the historic Orpheum Theatre and Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver, BC as well as many churches in and around the Vancouver area.

After serving as musical director at her church for four years, she was invited to be a lead vocalist for the Ninth Hour Band. She continued to make regular appearances with them for two years. Barb also had the privilege of sharing the stage with Celine Dion at GM Place on her North American tour as well as gracing the independent movie scene with a riveting performance of Sweet Heart of Jesus in the movie Bad Money. She has also shared the stage with Michael Bublé and her vocal talent has been extensively used by the Nashville Songwriters Association and the Vancouver Jingle Industry. Recently, Barb also received Honorable Mention for her song "Come To Me" in the Billboard World Song Contest.

"In every adversity there is a seed of equal or greater benefit. For me, the benefit of going through my own personal set of challenges was that it has put a desire in me to communicate hope and a better way to live to others that may have had a rough start in life. It is a joy to see how what I have learned from my experience is impacting others in a positive way."

Hey, Barb --- good to hear from you. Yes, I have a smallish project studio where I compose and record the film Cues. A CUE is basically the song for a specific scene and referred to by CUE name, on a CUE sheet, which is submitted to the licensing agency for public listening. Most of my work is keyboard or soft-synth based. The Lover was recorded by a friend of mine as a DEMO (about 9 years ago). The idea for the song came to me in a dream - Song of Songs type of stuff.

So, how are things going for you? Are you still in VanCouver?  Lovely city. We were there about 14 years ago. Would love to return.

Hi Barb, Thank you so much for the kind words about my songs...about the kid concentration, I have led worship with kids for many years:)  But I love your music and I love the quote you have by Abraham Maslow on your page.  I have never heard that before, but it makes perfect sense.  Keep up the great Kingdom work you are doing.  Stay in touch, Danny Ray

Thank you for your kind comment.  It's spring here, almost summer.  Yes Australia is a wonderful country, lots of open space and freedom.  My husband and I will be visiting Canada next year.  At the moment I am still perfecting the mixes of my songs.  I like your happy voice and pure sound.  Keep in touch.

Hi Barb! I do love your song Thorns and Roses! Yes, it fits my story perfectly. I loooooove that God is a God of redemption, healing, and restoration. Yay!

We live in the Boise area and haven't yet made it up to the northern part of the state. We've had too much fun exploring nearby. Hopefully in the spring we can make a trek up north.

I do hope you'll get on Facebook. It's such a great way to easily connect with friends. You can add links to your sites and songs. You can even set up a fan page to keep your fans up-to-date on your projects and concerts. If you decide to sign up, please drop me a friend request.

Great to visit with you! I'm so glad God brought us together. Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice!

Love and BIG cyber-hugs!

Hi, Barb, good to hear from you. Facebook seems to work well for me, in that it is more relationship oriented. I'm working on my Master's Certificate in audio proudction at Berklee. Right now, I'm taking Audio Mastering Techniques.  Some of the most amazing instructors are lending their talents to this academic pool.  It has been a wonderful expxerience for me. Since I'm a wife and mom, and living in smallish town in the mid-west, having access to something global like Berklee music on-line has been a blessing.

Good to hear about your shows. I know that must be rewarding to have a tour that is meaningful. You're a dear. Keep on keeping on!

Hi Barb!

Great to hear from you! Glad you are keeping busy and touring. You'll have to come up Idaho way, where the temps are nice and cool--snow in the mountains. Woo hoo!

We do love living here. I post lots of photos on my Facebook page. There's too much beauty not to share. :)

Our TX house remains on the market (almost seven months). God is taking great care of us, but we sooo hope that door opens soon.

Have a wonderful day, sweet friend! Take good care of yourself. My prayers are with you!

Hugs and bunches of blessings,
Lisa

I’m Looking Down
29 August 2009

I may not be big. I may not be small
When I am there at your side
Perhaps in your height,
Or just a little more tall
Because I’m looking down
To be the comforter at your side
To be with you, in all my love
A love I never ever will hide

I am looking down. And loving you
I’m looking down, deep within your heart
I am there beside you, and we will never depart
Don’t give up on me. Don’t look away
Because I am looking down to you
Each and every living day

Because this was my view
This was all I had to see
I was looking back at you
And you were thinking of me
You will see me in a ray of light
You will see me in a far off land
Because everywhere you do go
I will be looking down to see
Where you do stand

I am looking down. And loving you
I’m looking down, deep within your heart
I am there beside you, and we will never depart
Don’t give up on me. Don’t look away
Because I am looking down to you
Each and every living day

And I know it is true

The way people talk, and use my name
Some for good, some for bad
And some, - even shame

I am looking down. And loving you
I’m looking down, deep within your heart
I am there beside you, and we will never depart
Don’t give up on me. Don’t look away
Because I am looking down to you
Each and every living day

I may not be big. I may not be small
When I am there at your side
Perhaps in your height,
Or just a little more tall
You will see me in a ray of light
You will see me in a far off land
Because everywhere you do go
I will be looking down to see
Where you do stand

I am looking down. And loving you
I’m looking down, deep within your heart
I am there beside you, and hoping
We will never ever need to be apart
I’m looking down, deep within your h
