What do you get when you cross a corn-fed Texan with the cutest and ONLY punk-girl playing guitar in Bangkok with the crazy-est ass drummer from Japan that any band could ever hope to have? BARBWIRE BATS!!
Barbwire Bats started to grill when Eddie met Nat in late September 2007. Both agreed they wanted to start a punk band. Both having never done so, started out on the path. They tried out for "Low Fat" or some incarnation of that band that proved to difficult for Eddie or Nat to fit in. Not giving up and wanting to play something more stripped down to punk rock basics Eddie and Nat started to meet at a studio every weekend to trade guitar chops!
It was when the strongest drummer you would ever hope to have came to the Barbwire Bats, Yusuke-Bat. If memory serves well he wanted to play bass but was pushed to where he belonged for this band, pulverizing skins on a drum kit!! Eddie was pushed into vocals “He speaks English” so that means he can sing!?!? (Note: Nat and Yusuke both sang later on and were outstanding singers!)
Eddie heading home one day and just days after recruiting Yusuke-Bat, ran across “Val” standing in the street thumping on a bass guitar with no amp in site. Perhaps he was looking for a amp and a band to plug into? Barbwire Bats were born! We started cutting our theeth on Bad Posture, Dead Boys, SLF and Damned cover songs.
We played our first show on February 3rd, 2008 at Electric Mayhem and it was almost the end of the band as it went well, less than stellar! Not giving up the Bats took another swing at a 2nd show on February 23rd, 2008 and it was the shot in the arm they needed to keep on swinging!
Later on Eddie ran across “CJ” a fellow Texan living in Thailand that was into body suspension. Eddie got the idea to mix CJ’s body suspension act with the Barbwire Bats turbo punk rock set.
No one knew how it would go over as NOTHING like this had been done in Thailand. Needless to say it was a shocker for the crowd!! The 2nd time would be the largest crowd CJ-Bat and the BwB would ever see or play to at MBK’s Tattoo convention on October 23rd, 2008.
Oh yeah, Val-Bat played a handful of shows and went to record with another band and was never heard from again. He was replaced by Poe, whose muscular bass playing was just the right to fill Val-Bats position.
You start, no you start, no you start, ok let’s stop or is that lest take a break? Eddie would soon mutate into a spider (See “Blood Thirst Spider” link below) and Yusuke would continue into the Cozmos or is that Cosmoz (See “Cosmoz” link below). Nat would later use her Gibson Explorer as firewood on one of those freezing cold nights in Bangkok and was never heard from again. Poe-Bat continued with Sky Counter Attack (See link below). Val-Bat,,,, still recording. Maybe someday he will finish and contact us.
