‘Only Souvenirs’ is a record that’s not trying to ‘rock out’ on us, that won’t go all ‘Deep and emotional’ or begin cracking appalling bum jokes behind our backs. It’s by no means a punk rock album either; this is sugary power pop all the way. But it’s pop music in its purest form, minus the pretensions, the obsession with image and the incessant, grating posturing.
Take nothing away from this three piece, ‘Only Souvenirs’ is a debut album of precocious quality and one that propels Barefoot right to the top of the UK power pop tree alongside the likes of the Bombjacks and Lovejunk. In a genus where larceny of the same worn-out sound is all but endemic this is something a little different and really quite refreshing.
Pop-punk record of the year so far? Quite possibly.

Barefoot came about in late 2000 after a drunken conversation between Beauty School Dropout drummer Andy and ex - Happy But Twisted frontman Chris at the wedding of Happy But Twisted guitar hero Wee Pete. (Pete was divorced 3 days later when he cancelled his honeymoon to play a gig at a barn dance in Arran). Unusually, in the cold clear sober light of day, it still seemed like a good idea so the hunt for a guitarist was on. Si and Andy had been in The Panics together many moons ago, and because he had learned a new chord since then, he was quickly recruited.
In Feb 2001, they managed to steal enough money from their mums' purses to record 4 songs at Pulse studios in Stirling. On the way home from the recording, Si got stuck in a snowdrift and had to spend the night in his car. It was here, in that freezing cold car, that he forgot how to play his new chord. Not long after, he had a near orgasmic and religious meeting with Ben Weasel and decided Barefoot wasn't for him and left to form a band where two chords were more than enough. He formed The Ritalins and now lives in a skip behind Tesco’s with only a copy of My Brain Hurts and an old issue of Fiesta's Readers Wives for company. The hunt for a guitarist was back on!
...Richie, who had previously played with Andy in Beauty School Dropout and knew the songs pretty well, was asked to record the album "Only Souvenirs" with Barefoot. He did a great job but couldn't stay as he has his own band, The Day I Snapped. He now lives in an abandoned church, and practices snowboard poses on top of the pews.
In Feb 2003 David replied to an advert the band had placed, and joined as lead guitarist. He impressed the band immediately by learning all the guitar parts in a couple of weeks, and having the desired ten fingers and eleven toes, was made the new permanent member...

This weekend sees the start of Rockers celebrations of 30 years of punk we have a 2 great shows coming up over the weekend and also a bumper all dayer coming up in the coming months featuring the best of Scottish punk Rock.
