Barney's Blurbs |
About me:
I doubt if a being like me shows up in too many demographic surveys. I'm a blues and jazz musician and freelance writer specializing in arts journalism and cultural observation. Lifestyle-wise, I'm a little bohemian around the edges. I like barbecued ribs, mushroom risotto, Bombay Sapphire martinis, Grant Green guitar chord voicings, the vocal delivery of O.V Wright, the grit of Earl Bostic's tenor sax honking, floating around Lake Monroe on a pontoon on a steamy August Sunday, and Christmas Eve with traditional hymns on the stereo, snow flying outside my door and really dear people gathered in my living room, with champagne bubbling in everyone's glass.
That said, I'm deeply concerned for the fate of Western civilization. If you're not, you should read America Alone by Mark Steyn, The Cube and the Cathedral by George Weigel, and Nanny State by David Harsanyi. Clear, rigorous thinking, and an acceptance of what 15,000 years of history tell us about human nature are things that are at a premium in this postmodern, surreal age.
If your curiosity is piqued by this combination of elements comprising my worldview, stop by Barney Quick.net and my blog, Bent Notes.
One more thing it's key for you to know about is my recently published novel, High C at the Sunset Terrace. It's set in Indianapolis in 1948 in the jazz clubs along Indiana Avenue. It's a rollicking ride through a neon-lit, magical world that is now long-gone.

Mark Steyn, Sonny Rollins, Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, Walter E. Williams, Benjamin Netanyahu, Ronnie Earl (the blues guitarist, not the disgraced Texas prosecutor), Oscar Peterson, P.J. O'Rourke, John Bolton
