What began with occasional jamming in John’s basement during the summer of 2009 was soon to become Barnicle Bill Trio. Despite their completely different backgrounds, the vibe amongst these three musicians clicked right away.
John is the personification of jazz tradition. He has played with such jazz icons as Chet Baker, Dizzy, Ben Webster, Stan Getz and many others. This shouldn't, however, suggest that he lacks curiosity and is unwilling to explore new paths and collaborations. For in fact the opposite is true. As regards Miguel and Mark, they perform regularly with many modern jazz groups like Martinez Move, New Cool Collective, Yuri Honing Wired Paradise and Agog. This has served to only increase their hunger to delve into the jazz tradition with stronger intensity. The effect and mutual inspiration they have on each other is an adventure, one that goes beyond style or genre. Communicating with another as well as the audience, that’s what it is about!
Their repertoire consists of ‘standards’ that never became standard; these span a broad range, from Chu Berry to Ornette Coleman, from Billy Strayhorn to Sonny Rollins.
After making two pirme time appearances on Dutch national television they presented their debut album at a sold out Bimhuis on May 13 2010, coinciding with John’s 75th birthday. In a very short time Barnicle Bill Trio has put their marks on the Dutch Jazz scene as being one of the new hot trios in the country.
