Born in Bolton, Lancashire, England. My father Joseph
played the piano and my elder brother Jack taught me
the rudiments of the guitar. I left home at 15 and
started working with bands doing residencies in
Hamburg (the Top Ten Club), Wupperthal (House der
Muzik) and various other clubs in throughout Europe.
It became a living.
Moved to London. Met up with Steve Took (T Rex),
Larry Wallace (Pink Faries) and started to
experiment...After a few years I took up residence in
Mexico then landing in Northern California (Montery)
playing small solo gigs. Returned back to London, and
was introduced to Marianne Faithfull by pianist and
friend, Dave Wilkie. Collaborated and recorded,
Broken English, with Steve York, Joe Maverty, Terry
Stannard and Steve Winwood.
Chris Blackwell, whose company, Island Records, signed
Marianne, asked me to join what would become the
Compass Point Studio Band, based in Nassau. The band
consisted of Sly, Robbie, Mikey Chung, Stickey and
Wally Baderou. We recorded a number of records with
Grace Jones, Black Uhuru, Joe Cocker, etc.
I am still associated with Chris Blackwell, producer
extraordinare, on various projects. I am still
writing with Marianne and Grace (who has an amazing
album about to be released). I also am writing and
playing with Baaba Maal, Sabina and Didi of the
Brazilian Girls, Catherine Ringer from Rita Mutsouko,
Antony from Antony and the Johnsons. I love the
process of collaboration along with my own solo work.
I am currently working on a musical idea that I am
extremely excited about.
A world tour with Marianne Faithful starts at the end of Feb 2007 in Romania. Further details when I get them.
