Born 16 September 1953 in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, Alan didn't enjoy both getting high school education and working at the factory, so preferred to release his talent of musician forming rock bands since he was a teenager. One of them that became successful was Black Lace. After representing Great Britain in the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest with "Mary Ann", Black Lace quartet had to re-form into duo, consisting of Colin Routh and Alan Barton. This party act was responsible for a string of hits in the mid-80s that enjoyed enormous popularity in discos and parties across the UK. However, those in pursuit of music with a marginally more cerebral nature made Black Lace a target for their relentless scorn. Black Lace carried on regardless, unleashing upon the nation (via Spanish holiday discos) a series of party songs initiated in 1984 by "Superman", which reached the UK Top 10, then "Agadoo", which reached the UK number 2 slot and remained in the charts for 30 weeks. This was followed by "Do The Conga" (UK number 10), "El Vino Collapso", "I Speaka Da Lingo" and "Hokey Cokey".
In 1986 Alan Barton joined a re-formed Smokie - the band that's always been one of his personal favorites - after the original lead singer Chris Norman left the line up for solo career. This drastic change of style wasn't an easy task for Alan at first, but he soon made his mark leading the band where they belong - back on top. Many of his songs written for Smokie became hits and his style became the band's firm trademark. Alan's stage charisma, offstage heartful attitude and musical talent attracted thousands of new fans to the band. They proved very popular touring Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia and South Africa, releasing 13 albums that were successful in charts all over the world while Alan was in the band. Tragedy struck on 19 March 1995 when the band's tour bus crashed at Gummersbach on the way to Dusseldorf airport. We lost Alan, but he's still loved and sadly missed by the band, friends, fans and family.
