"Basement Magic conjures jazz innovation, perfection." - The Baltimore Examiner
"(They) do more than play classics by Rogers and Hart, as well as jazz standards by Hank Mobley, Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker, they take them apart, reshape their insides and put them back together again." - Cleveland's 90.3 WCPN
After graduating from the New School University's jazz program, Max Goldman (drums, Rochester), Jeff Ratner (bass, Philadelphia), and Patrick Breiner (tenor sax, Baltimore) decided that it was time to actually start learning about jazz. Max's basement became their new university. For the last 2 years this trio has built upon what they learned from masters such as Eric Alexander, George Garzone, Tony Malaby, Billy Hart, Kenny Washington, Gerald Cleaver, Thomas Morgan, and Reggie Workman. Their weekly musical explorations have led them deep into the swing and groove of the past whilst simultaneously rocketing them toward the future with a devil-may-care approach to group interplay and sonic melodicism. Basement. Magic. Dig?
